ORLANDO – The UCF men's basketball team is set to begin its 2022-23 campaign, hosting UNC Ashville on Monday night at 8 p.m. inside Addition Financial Arena.

Head Coach Johnny Dawkins enters his seventh season at the helm of the Knights' program after finishing the 2021-22 slate with an 18-12 record, including a remarkable 13-3 record at home. Overall, the Knights have gone 71-21 at home during the Dawkins era, a .772 winning percentage.

UCF's season begins with a three-game homestand, and it gets started against the Bulldogs Monday, a team that was picked to finish third in the Big South's preseason poll. The two sides have only met three times in program history, with the Knights winning all three matchups. The last time UCF met UNC Ashville on the hardwood was back in 1990, a 91-76 Knight victory in Orlando.

UCF is 6-0 in season openers under Dawkins, defeating Robert Morris at home 69-59 last year to open the season.

Good stuff…

The positives: UCF's defense held Memphis under their scoring average and forced some crucial turnovers in a tough road win. The negatives: UCF had difficulty getting off the field, gave up too many third downs and hurt themselves with an array of penalties. UCF defensive coordinator Travis Williams breaks down the performance and gives his early thoughts about Tulane.

Who is going to the Cotton Bowl?

I know a lot of folks are glum on the year looking at the up and downs of this season. I know the talking points too:

- We are only good against trash teams
- We were dominated by a trash ECU
- We have no deep ball threat
- Defense has been good most of the time, but have had their issues
- We would get crushed against a team with a pulse.

However- if (if) we can pull off the win tomorrow and if (if) we win out, we would win the AAC and likely still go to the Cotton Bowl.

Our only competition for the NY6 slot right now will be Coastal Carolina. If they lose one more, we would receive the G5 bid- and CC has a tough schedule ahead. If they don't lose, we still have a shot.

So- yes, a lot of ifs, but I am indeed "saying, there is a chance."

I just got home...

Flight was 1:30 CST, got back into Orlando close to 5 p.m. EST, huge traffic jam getting out of MCO, took 40 minutes to get home. Was home for 15 minutes and then headed out to UCF for coordinator interviews because UCF thinks media has charters like they do.*

Lol, I'm really, really behind considering I've been gone since last Wednesday. Will try and post the Chip/T-Will interviews tonight, get to PFF at some point and maybe Sights & Sounds early this week. Gus presser is in the morning and he'll be the definitive word on injuries. Also MBB opener is tomorrow night. I need to book my Tulane hotel too.

DC Travis Williams needs to go away

I have seen enough. Each week it is a struggle for our defense. Our defensive line and linebackers generate no pass rush and our defensive backfield couldn’t cover my deceased grandmother. I’m happy our Knights are winning games but we let our opponents hang around, in the fourth quarter, too much. In 2023, UCF will be lucky to win two conference games in the Big-12. Running by your opponent and continuing to execute arm tackles has got to stop soon. Gus truly knows he needs to fire Travis Williams however, we fans know he won’t do that.
