That was the quote at the introductory press conference. Well we are whiffing on transfers and not bothering to go after key positions for depth(oline, dline, lb, qb) , losing recruits and might lose more, might have the fewest amount of recruits that we ever had. Oh and Gus has never filled out a full recruiting class since he’s been here. Our idiot ad sold us Gus on two facets: offense and recruiting. He’s failed at both aspects. So why does he still have a job?

Let’s be honest if Heupel’s recruiting class fell apart and he failed to recruit after the last 3 weeks we’d have people that would be organizing parties with pitchforks and nooses calling for a glorified lynching. Oh btw, Heupel beat a way more talented Memphis side with a bad backup qb in the conference championship game. Gus got blown out by 17 and scared our best wr to the portal not even the draft. This senile guy quit recruiting in august. Remember how the shill 247 writer said how the Cincinnati win was going to be a “boon to recruiting”? That sure turned out to be true, right?

We need to stop blaming the portal and nil and have serious discussions about how god awful Gus has been. Using a helicopter for a kid with 0 p5 offers as a qb and a low 3 star who doesn’t even start for sta. If this was anyone else UCF fans would be pissed, but for some reason Gus gets a pass.

Oh btw I coached against rizk. Kid had 5 ints against our defense in 2 games this year. He can’t throw more than 20 yards. Take away the medium routes and he gets lost.

9-4, 9-4 so far (played for hardware). Better recruiting classes than in the past years (on paper and assuming they all actually sign). I’m not seeing the “implosion” you speak of. I think you have to wait until Feb 2nd to see how it all shakes out. Plus, the portal is wreaking havoc for almost every program.

Are we going to take a step back next year…probably. I am expecting that. Better weekly opponents and more difficult away (and home) games. I think you start making/forcing some potentially bigger moves once we see how we fare next season.

Btw, Memphis’s defense was trash in 2018 (every year, really). Ranked #94 while we were #39. In 2017 their defense was ranked #102. Yes, they did have great offenses.

A blind man could go 9-4 in the aac. Heck Charlie Strong had double digit wins his first year. Holgo went 12-2 last year in the aac. Frost went undefeated and he’s not a good hc. The aac was a dumpster of trash outside of us, Cinci, and Houston. The aac was a joke of a conference and let’s stop pretending it wasn’t. Also let’s look at the context of those 4 losses:

Amari Johnson, along with former players, are trashing the scheme and blatantly saying the scheme cost us vs tulane. Let’s ignore all that and pretend February 2nd is some great day despite regular signing day being dead. No real talent signs in February, unless they de commit like the twins might do to us, it’s all early signing day. That’s been proven time and time again.

Have we ever been like USF? Rhetorical question. The answer is “ No”. Be real. Let the process be the process. Name another program that has gone through 5 different conferences in the last 23 years (Independent…ok, not a conference, MAC, CUSA, American and the Big 12)? None. It’s kind of insane…the progress our program has made.

We’ve made good program-level decisions so far. Gus isn’t going anywhere for two more seasons and we need to let the money roll in to make needed upgrades. It just doesn’t make much sense to do anything less, unless the team goes completely off the rails. At that time decisions will have to be made. Remember, this isn’t just about football. This is all our sports having to take a step up to yet another level.

If the scheme sucked, how come it beat Tulane and Cincy just a few weeks earlier? The difference was we were healthy in those games. Nobody thinks this team (or last years team) was on the level of 2017 or 2018. To try and compare them to those teams is asinine. We know exactly what we are, what Gus is and the reason he was hired…to give us several years of stability as we enter the Big 12. Then when we have money rolling in we can spend it.

How does his piss-poor scheme and offense end up ranked #11 if it is piss-poor? If it was piss-poor the stats would show it being piss-poor.

If past players are saying they don‘t like Gus’s scheme then I’m glad those players are gone. Thanks for your service. We can now find players that will fit his scheme. O’Keefe caught 85 and 73 passes respectively the last two seasons, ranking #9 and #17 (with a game left). Javon has 54 receptions in basically his first year as a starter, with 3 years of eligibility left to get better. Kobe Hudson has two years of eligibility left. We need to have players in a system for more than a second so they can understand it and work within its construct.

I mean if Gus sucks, you know football, and you’re so awesome at coaching I’m really thinking our program is just on idle until you reach the pinnacle of your career and take us to the promised land. Until then you can have your opinion and I’ll have mine.

Have we ever been like USF...umm yes do you not remember 2015. We can be up on our high horse now but we also hold the distinction of one of the few teams to have multiple winless seasons.

It came in 11th because it set the scoring and yardage record against hapless opponents. It was shut down by other defenses like ECU, Navy, Georgia Tech, Louisville. Not exactly world beaters.
 
Just calm down, we will get a solid recruiting and transfer class. And we shouldn’t expect to get more than 5 wins in our first P5 season. It will take 2-3 years to build the roster depth we need to compete year in and out, no matter who the coach is.

And hopefully the mothers of the high school Harrys running around will turn off the internet parental controls so they can go back to surfing porn rather than embarrassing themselves here.

It will take years to judge these classes but we are barely even recruiting high school at this point. It doesn’t seem like a sustainable model. A lot of the good will gained from getting ex-5 star portal players in lieu of high school development will start to wear off if they continue to bust. We need a lot of help on the OL and in the LB room and the last 2 seasons have seen us lose our 2 best LB transferring out and bringing in big name portal busts. OL is going to be a problem once the current core is out of eligibility. Nobody else has seen much playing time.

I remember every season since 1999 when I first got my season tickets. Been to a ton of away games as well where we just flat got our @ss kicked. You should go check out a bunch of P5 programs and their history. They have multiple winless seasons as well, or several seasons with 1-2 wins. There's some programs like Arizona and others that just haven't done anything in like 50-60 years. Truly depressing to try and be a fan of those teams. Most P5 programs that are not yearly fixtures at the top of their conferences have plenty of bad seasons over their history accept a few legendary/blue chip programs like Bama, LSU, Georgia, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Penn State, etc.... They've also all been around like 100 years or more (and have all the advantages of decades of football money rolling in and the benefit of conference affiliation). Many even have decades of conference football even before WW2. At least when we suck we do it to perfection. If we didn't have 0 wins, there is only one other season we had less than 4 wins.

Even in those years we were not like USF. We made changes, recovered and climbed back up the mountain, usually the next season (except for 2003 to 2004 but 2003 we had issues and kicked our starting QB (Ryan Schneider) off the team, as well as firing Kruczek before that season was over...pat on the back to myself and friend Derek who put up www.firemikekruczek.com that season because we had become so frustrated watching us have a football team instead of a program, which was the real problem at that time...we knew we could become something potentially special if we did the right things). USF is still at the bottom of the mountain looking up at it and wondering what to even do. There really isn't much difference between 0/1/2/3/4/5 wins, though. You sucked. In fact, like every season, in 2015 I stayed until the end of each game, even though the team had given up on the field and watched that garbage until 00:00....but we started on a much different trajectory the very next year in 2016. Just like 2004, we went 8-5 in 2005 and played for the conference title....we changed our trajectory.

I mean, we only really started a football program in 2004. 19 seasons ago....that's it. We just had a football team before that. There is a big difference.

Just a few teams that have multiple winless seasons (I'll stop whenever they started football or around WW2 if they were around before that):
Florida (1979, 1946)...pretty good....they only went below below 4 wins two other seasons.
FSU (1973). Only had 1 win in 1974. Went below 4 wins two other seasons (I won't count 2020 where they only won 3 games but they only played 9)
South Carolina (1999). They also have below 4 wins in 12 other seasons.
Pitt...No winless seasons but they have 24 seasons where they had less than 4 wins, including 6 seasons with 1 win, and a streak from 1964-1968 (5 seasons) where they won a total of 9 games or 1.8 games/season.

For example, on rivals we're ranked #58 but if you sort it by player ranking we are #32. We're getting quality players. Rivals gives you points for just picking up verbal commits. If I get one 4-star and you get 5 2-star players I have no idea which team gets more "points" in their rankings. Yeah, I agree 11 kids right now is light and we need to pick up more (quality) commits. You can't build your team through the portal. You have to use it to try and fix gaps/holes.

If you get 1 player and another team gets 5, the team with 5 should probably rate higher. Average is a good gauge at some point, but a team with 20 commits and a lower average is a better class than 11 with higher average. I.e if you dropped the lowest rated 9 kids their average would increase. Adding more depth doesn’t make the class worse even if average decreases.
 
Experienced 1 year filler player that can play and mentor two guys in year 2, and three incoming LBs. We literally have no LBs. All three starters are at least Seniors. We have to find bodies. Total busts on previous LBs from the portal (Latu, Jennings, McDaniel and Lewis), and everybody else left. LB is the hardest position to recruit at the college level. Hope we find enough guys or they’ll be converting players over to that position.

That’s the problem with the portal. If you strike out on several players in one unit, it’s a big problem and can ripple through that whole side of the team. Thus is the world with the portal. High school recruits are deprioritized in favor of someone that has supposed experience but you never know how it’s going to work out until they are there and it works out. I think there is too much emphasis on the portal unless you are Clemson, Bama, etc… that can cherry pick the very best that are in it. If someone is moving because they couldn’t get playing time that’s usually a red flag, unless it’s like Baker and Hudson who came from Bama and Auburn (because he was recruited by Gus).
