1PM Press Conf - GOL stepping down as AD

You guys really hate the guy, huh. SMH. I think this should be his last year as well, but I also appreciate all he's done to get us here. You'd think the man has had 3 to 4 losing seasons in a row around here. Geez.

Charge On!

I think the hate is more because he refuses to let go. Just announce your resignation so that we can all rally behind you and win some games.

I don't fault giving him a shot at the AD role. But it didn't work out so we move on. I still say that I hope we hire an AD who understands the need to turn the page. We should all eventually wish GOL well for everything he's done for UCF.

He was unqualified for the athletic director role. Plus we need someone that can glad hand the boosters to get $

Yea and the other 6 we've either won conference championships and won a bowl game or at least played in one. What's your point?

Like I said, I hope he pulls the plug and retires at year's end. But I also fear we're in a "grass is greener" mentality. We'll get a young coordinator as a coach, who will then leave in 2-3 years for a P5 job, and that will thus be our cycle.

Oh, I don't hate him at all. He's been nothing but nice to me and my wife when we have met him and he is funny as hell. Like, dry, stand-up comedy funny. He should probably go into that when it's all set and done.

But I love my school and my program more. I am very appreciative of all the good that came from him, but being that it's pretty much a 50/50 split good vs. bad, I think it's time for him to go. This is not about you or me or anybody else here: this is about what's best for our program.

Cool, so let's just stick with somebody mediocre because at least they'll never leave us.

SMFH...

GOL didnt do this for free. He was paid to do his job and paid well. For those who claim we personally hate him is last grasp measures to keep him around. I dont know if its because youre on his payroll or if you cant grasp the concept that his head coach job isnt community service.

The comments made from the GOL "haters" will not necessarily be the opinions of ucfrivals.com or its affiliates, sponsors or advertisers, but for those that are fed up with apologist fans that act smug and arrogant in defending their coach because they think they know more about college football then posting your dislike for him is welcome here. Its not for the huggers or the faint of heart.*

I wonder if this little experiment will ever get duplicated somewhere or if this is the last time we see a coach given the chance to be AD simultaneously.

Why would a person want to be coach and AD other than for money? Seems like more pressure and way more work. If you get fired from one you should lose both.

Pressured by Hitt I'm sure. We need to trust Hitt. He will make the best decisions for UCF. He's not stupid.

Did we seriously just hire the national search firm? Why haven't they been searching for the last couple months? If GOL wanted to throw in his resume for full time AD he could have during that time.

I agree! Love the guy! He's hysterical! That's why I think he deserves to go out better. I believe that what must be done eventually should be done immediately. If GOL is going to leave the program which we all agree he will, he should do it now rather than later.

Yes they did from what i heard. Guys like Matty and SC4Knight have been saying this all along but in defense of GOL. Our progam is still unorganized and we spend money we dont have. We've made bad decisions and apparently put all our eggs in one basket to take us to the promise land. Yet the hugger argument is that hiring GOL had nothing to do with moving to the P5 although its the same guys like GOL that said if they come calling lets build facilities to impress them. On one hand we're told im here just to build a program and nothing more, and on the other hand we need stadiums and arenas if you want the P5 to come calling....but when i say we need to beat these P5 teams they say its not about winning its about playing....yet when conference realignment talks heat up these same clowns complain when we are overlooked.
If you want to be clear about your intent as a program act like the MAC. Bowling Green for example reduced seating for their stadium even after having their best years during a time when the MAC could arguably claim to be a Top 5 conference. They sent a message that theyre fine as a G5 program. The huggers dontt.
Dr Hitt and GOL need to clarify with its fanbase whether they want to join a P5 conference or not because some of its supporters have been told otherwise obviously behind closed doors.*

We all want winners. I thought oh great we hired GOL. This is a coach that will help us get over the hump of losing close games because of issues such as ball control. Personally he's probably one of those polarizing figures...if you get him he's hilarious...if not thats what you get. Its not about him personally, its about the program.

We have 6 conference championships?

We at least competed for a conference championship in those other 6 years (finished top 2 in the division)
So the peaks are high and the valleys are low. That's still barely above .500 and, I don't know about you, but I think after 13 years he should have this whole winning thing down.

It’s unclear whether O’Leary is the right person to fix UCF football at this point given his age and the fact that it has fallen so far with very few warning signs. But he has a better shot at that than trying to run an athletic department that has been in chaos since former AD Todd Stansbury left for Oregon State.

Within the department, staffers were leaving left and right for other programs (some, to be fair, followed Stansbury to Oregon State) and there were questions internally about whether O’Leary understood the all-consuming nature of being an athletics director in the year 2015.

These are no longer jobs where everyone’s favorite coach can semi-retire to a life of golf junkets and cocktail parties with boosters. These are heavy-duty, detail-oriented administrative positions with long hours, endless meetings and budget crunches.

The UCF job will, according to a person familiar with the industry, attract the interest of nearly every deputy athletics director in a power conference and a number of sitting athletics directors in Conference USA and the Sun Belt. Though the new person in charge will inherit significant challenges, particularly if O’Leary can’t get the football product back up to par, it’s better than the alternative.

Excellent response. Nobody hates him...geeze. We just want to take this program to the next level. I feel bad for GOL that this is happening but for $2mil, we can do better. GOL got this program built, facilities built, Top Ten ranking BUT.....he got paid to do this. He get's paid well. This is a business (like it or not). His decisions have not been good lately (last year or so)

Can one person please, please tell me how much time was actually devoted to his AD duties on a weekly basis. I hear a lot of speculation and heresay but no facts....none. When someone can show me how many hours he was coaching last year and how much time the interim AD gig is taking away from his hours this year, then there can start to be a real discussion about it. Otherwise this is just a repeating bunch of opinion pieces without any facts.

With no NFL or P5 team within 90 minutes, we should be a bigger thing locally.
Matt and SC4Knights would disagree. We're G5 and thats what we should accept although proof exists that GOL and the administration have upgraded facilities for P5 consideration.

Well it also goes to what type of athletic program do you want? I would like to get somebody that thinks outside the box.

Doesn't matter how much time he was spending as the AD, it obviously took away from the final product on the football field and that is a fact.
