Dark Side of Gus Malzahn
When you think about Auburn's 2013 BCS National Championship run, you think about all the iconic individual plays made by Marshall. What you don't think about is all the dirty work put in by Tre Mason.
FYI, Gus is not afraid to run a player to death to win a football game. Despite having two other future NFL backs (Cameron Artist-Payne and Corey Grant) on the bench, Gus ran Tre Mason 317 times for 1,816 yards in 2013. Auburn led the nation in rushing at 328 ypg, but it took a toll on Mason, who now suffers from CTE: https://hiphopdx.com/news/id.67067/...suspected-cte-gets-ignored-by-michael-strahan
(In 2017, Kerryon Johnson suffered an injury on his 30th carry with Gus trying to run up the score against Saban and uat late in the fourth quarter. It cost Gus an SEC title and CFP berth because Auburn lost to Georgia in the SEC championship game two weeks later. In a bizarre situation similar to Mikey Keene's, running back Kamryn Pettway, the 2016 SEC Player of the Year, chose to sit out most of 2017 season.)
For further comparison, Auburn averaged 52 rushes per game in 2014. UCF averages 48 totes per game. Gus has done a much better job of spreading the ball around. UCF doesn't have a Tre Mason, but Auburn didn't have a Javon Baker, Ryan O'Keefe, or Kobi Hudson.
I *hope* and expect UCF to compare more favorably stat-wise to the 2009 Colt McCoy-led Texas team than the 2014 Auburn team moving forward.
Time will tell.
