i believe they start some competitions today, but opening ceremonies tomorrow night.

i love the olympics and cant wait to watch alot of the events over the next couple weeks. anyone here going to be watching and if so what are you looking forward to?

i always love the snowboarding stuff. also really interested in curling

There are a lot of elimination rounds for the early sports so they start those a day or two in advance. Some athletes will be eliminated before the opening ceremonies. Which just leaves more time for debauchery.

Yeah - they already started some stuff. I love the olympics too.

Sucks when they're that far away though, pretty nothing will be live. The opening ceremony is technically at around 6a EST tomorrow AM.

2010 hockey was some of the best hockey I have ever witnessed, sucks the NHL doesn't let players go anymore.

Hockey is my favorite in the Winter Olympics with all the NHL players, its high quality and some exciting stuff. Bummed that the NHL isn't letting their players go this year.

I get way more into the summer olympics and the World Cup.

The snow boarding events are cool to watch

i will definitely be following the hockey team. like everyone else said, i wish the nhl let their players go.

I don't. As fun as the Olympics may be, they're not worth the risk they pose to NHL teams. The absolute last thing I want right now is to stop the season and have a bunch of Tampa Bay players go to Korea where they may or may not return healthy. It could also kill a lot of momentum.

I am perfectly content letting college kids play in the Olympics to keep the NHL full steam ahead.

World Cup can do it. Hockey can do it.

EDIT: To be fair, MLS doesn't give a full break for the WC either.

It's only the Olympics though, not the WC. Soccer sends U23 or U21 to the Olympics.

True but there’s the Euros during Olympic Years, so it wouldn’t really work with both.

I don’t know international hockey well enough to know if the Olympics is as big as it gets or if there’s a larger tounrmanent.

I love the bi-athlon. There is nothing better than long distance skiing and shooting when you’re exhausted.

Russia had a cool cross-country course (used for biathlon too). It's a bummer USA is so weak in these sports but it's fun to watch.

I've played curling. I've watched curling. I still don't really think much of it. But that's just me.

Why are these things being hosted in Pyeongchang? The county has less than 50,000 people. I just read the county put almost $13B into hosting the Olympics.

Curling is basically a bar room "sport". On par with pool, darts and cornhole. Guarantee you could curl just fine after 6 or 8 beers.

The winter games don’t do much for me in general. Snowboarding is awesome, downhill is ok, but the rest of meh.

USA has not been performing well in general. Lots of 4th and 5th place finishes.

Last night we had 2 favorites to win gold not even win a medal and another Bronze favorite also not medal. Too many of those.

We're 11 behind leader Norway at this point. We finished 4th in the medal count in 2014 but the gap was only 4 total medals. We could easily fall to 7th or worse this year.

Where are you looking? NBC says we had the most medals in 2014 (although not the most gold).

Also - Norway is the all time medal leader for Winter Olympics.

I looked too fast. I guess we were technically behind Russia in medals but they had to vacate them due to being dirty communist cheats.

So yea, we were 4th due to Gold count but had the most medals. Don't think we'll repeat here.

Shiffrin didn't even medal in slalom which is her best event.

This would be like if Phelps didn't even medal in the butterfly.

We are not doing well in curling and our women lost to Canada in hockey, so as far as I'm concerned this has been a total disaster.

Our women's hockey team has lost to Canada the last 4 times they've played I believe. However - it will likely be the Gold medal game.

After watching so much NHL, women's hockey looks like it's in slow motion. They'd probably lose in a NHL goalie race.

Not to knock women's team sports - but that's usually the case. Women's WC is alright but NWSL is nearly unwatchable. There's just a very large difference between the best of the best and the average player.

Same thing in snowboarding. The very best women were barely getting 5-6 feet in the air and towards the end of the pipe were barely getting air at all.

The men were getting 20 feet into the air and doing tricks that the women couldn't do.

It's not sexist to admit that women's sports pale in comparison to men. My wife doesn't even like women's sports since they're boring.

That Snowboard-Cross is a fun event to watch.

Did you all see that story on Lindsey Jacob-Ellis? Poor thing. One of the best - fell (with NO ONE around her) the last 3 olympics and this time finishes 4th. ROUGH.
