The same concept that allows a county cleck to opt out of gay marriage (Christian) also protects a county clerk from not only refusing to license alcohol (Islamic) but even not issue Selective Service IDs (any anti-war religion). But if you ask a typical Liberal these days, they will say, "Do the job," forgetting they are tearing down many long-standing concepts they even believe in.
Charlotte started it, not the state in Raleigh. The latter just knee-jerked, and the rest is history.
Even the left-leaning The Atlantic pointed this out. I can truly appreciate critical and deep thinking Liberal articles in The Atlantic which, unfortunately, doesn't represent most Liberals these days. Heck, The Atlantic has been spot-on about Trump's popularity, constantly asking the rest of the Liberal media to stop making him so popular with their own, gross ignorance and self re-enforcing beliefs that are disproved.
One of these days we'll get back to focusing on individual rights, instead of group rights. Like the fact that the whole bathroom issue is about individual privacy. I really want 1 bathroom, with 1 set of stalls, shared, 1 line, no duplication of big accessibility stalls or baby changing stations, dads can take their daughters and moms can take theirs sons into the bathroom without issue, etc... The concept of separate bathrooms is from a day when far fewer women worked, usually had the kids with them, etc... statistically.
But I think like a Libertarian -- individual rights -- not a Liberal or Conservative -- group rights.
