"We've noticed that it's not worth it for us to work OT. When we work more hours you take out more for 401K and taxes. It doesn't seem fair that we work more hours and get even more money taken from us."

They finally noticed that someone named 401K is stealing money from them every month.

You know, maybe if they had a good example from their employer how to work? They watch your big ass sit on the message boards all day long, after all.

Wait until they realize where their tax money is going. They might never show up again.

Yeah and the dumb part of that is there is usually a match on top of it.

They do have a point: if OT is paid at the same rate, the take home portion is less than for the original 40 hours. Remember, the first $8000 or so is tax free, then 10%, etc. OT pays taxes at their highest rate. It is more money but it might not be worth compared with the value of free time (especially if they have to work weekends).
If they get paid 1.5 times, they are stupid.

You lost all credibility at the bolded statement.

All kidding aside, they get a 401k to hang signs. That isn't exactly rocket surgery and I am guessing Bob's company isnt exactly a Fortune 500 so they are getting a great benefits plan for a job that likely never sees those kinds of benefits.

Guaranteed that most of them don't see the value in the 401k though GDS, otherwise you make a great point

This is the same people that takes the money out of the 401k at a 50% loss so you can be sure they don't see the benefit of 401Ks.
I am just saying that they might see it more as a punishment than a benefit since they only look at the bump of their paycheck

Just for some clarification.

OT is time and a half so even for the guys that hit the next tax bracket they're still making more than 40 hour time.

They are not smart enough to consider being bumped into the next tax bracket. They are legitimately concerned about "losing" more money to 401k and withholding.

These guys get everything and more back at the end of year with EITC and head of household, etc.

Our guys have pretty good benes for small company blue color workers. 5% match on 401k and 50% health insurance paid. We're a mid sized company in our industry, it's very localized except for the giant nationals. The larger companies in our industry have better but not much. The smaller companies have nothing. They don't think about that at all. There are constantly people leaving for a buck to two more an hour for jobs with no benes. That includes guys leaving that have a 10 minute to our shop for jobs that are an hour away for a dollar more an hour.

Yes they are stupid and only see what is being "taken" from them.

I have the solution: send a memo saying the overtime is NOT allowed unless it is approved by xxxxx.

They'll start bitching and moaning approximately 5 minutes after receiving the memo. You'll have plenty of volunteers for OT after that
