Adrian Killins has been on cloud nine ever since he received the call from UCF coach Scott Frost on Thursday with news of an offer.
That night, the Daytona Beach (Fla.) Mainland speedster called the offer a "blessing" and gave a strong indication he was looking to make a commitment. There was one little issue - he had already promised the coaches at USF he would stop by on Saturday morning for an unofficial visit.
"I did have a good day at USF," Killins said. "The coaches showed me a lot of love. They showed me around the campus and the facilities. I watched the practice, it was high tempo. I've got a great relationship with that staff."
Although he didn't publicly reveal it on Thursday, UCF was really the offer he had been waiting for. He's tight with former Seabreeze star Charles Nelson, who signed with Oregon in the 2014 class and is currently a sophomore safety. Killins said he always wanted to play for Oregon, so when UCF hired Frost it was like Oregon came to him.
He made arrangements to stop by UCF on Saturday night on his way back to Daytona Beach. The coaches and staff said they'd be waiting for him. Killins knew what he wanted to do.
"The first thing I did was go into the office and met Coach Frost," Killins said. "He's a great guy. The rest of the coaching staff was there too. He asked right away if I wanted to become a Knight. I said, 'Yes, right now!' We all started getting hype in the coach's office. They were real happy that I committed on the spot. I was so excited and so were they. It's just so awesome. In the office, when I committed, Coach Frost said, 'We just made history. You're my first commit since I've been at UCF. Welcome to UCF. You're a Knight.'"
At first, Killins thought he was going to take official visits before coming to a decision. But when UCF came along, why wait? He knew he wanted to be close to home and loved the academic profile.
"As soon as we pulled up to UCF it just felt right," Killins said. "I've been to UCF a bunch, for camps and whatnot. I've toured the facilities and know what they bring from an academic standpoint. It's awesome. You can't ask for more. I told my mom that I want to play here for the next four years of my life. It's an hour away from home. That's beneficial for me and my family. They're so excited. They can come to every game. My auntie just graduated from UCF, she's in grad school right now. So I'm following in her steps."
Killins said Frost spoke more of his vision not only for UCF but for him as a player.
"He's putting in that Oregon offense," Killins said. "He's trying to bring in guys with speed that can make plays and win games for UCF. He said he wants me on the field at all times. Help bring UCF football back. I'm going to be everywhere on the field. They like my speed. He likes how I'm versatile. He said I can play slot receiver, kick returner, punt returner and various positions on the field."
What are his goals for the Black & Gold?
"Academics are the main thing for me so I want to get that degree first and foremost," Killins said. "On the field, I want to bring UCF football back. I know I'm going to be a part of a great family and a great coaching staff."
Killins, who will take his official visit in January, says UCF's recruiting is about to take off. Shortly after this interview, the Knights landed pledges from two more local players, Dr. Phillips wide receiver Jaquarius Bargnare and Sanford-Seminoile cornerback Brandon Moore.
"Coach Frost said since I'm his first commit I'm going to be his mini recruiting coordinator," Killins said. "I'm talking to a few guys, trying to get them to come to UCF. We're going to put together a great recruiting class."
