Gene Frenette: A big step backward for Bortles

There seemed to be more a tone of despair in Blake Bortles’ voice after this indignant loss. It was the third consecutive week his Jaguars were an epic second-half failure, though he didn’t want to admit it cut more deeply than road collapses against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Indianapolis Colts.

“No, they all suck equally,” said Bortles.

And on that note, the biggest hope of the Jaguars’ franchise walked out of his press conference. Bortles was in a hurry to get away, no doubt to contemplate how the anticipated growth of a second-year quarterback could take such a giant leap backward at the worst possible time.

3-5 years is probably the amount of time needed to mature as an NFL QB. Plus, He's passing 40-50 times a game and has a very sporadic running game. That's a lot to put on a young QB. I think he'll be alright if he has a short memory of these years.

I've been torturing myself and watching most Jags games just bc Bortles and the Houston game yesterday was the most frustrated I've seen him. He was playing well but has the tendency to force one once the Jags Defense gives up a drive effortlessly to get the lead back to double digits. He's sick of losing

I wish he would have dropped and got drafted by an organization like Denver to sit behind Peyton for a few seasons. Jacksonville is a dumpsterfire

JMHO...

first of all, who the h*** is Gus Frenette? He definitely had a problem with Blake's reaction to the press conference....get over it Frenette...Blake is the most important player in the Jax franchise right now....and if you don't think so, cut him loose and watch the other teams scramble to pick him up...

now about Blake....he made some bad decisions on Sunday so it was his worst game (decision wise) this season....that's a step backwards and Blake owned up to it....but he's got to more than own up to it, he's got to correct it since games like this bring out the Frenette's who focus on him and not the real problem in Jax....

the 2 very poor decisions by Blake were the pick in the end zone when he underthrew Thomas and the pick six when he missed Thomas....but notice that Thomas was on the receiving end of both...obviously, with Thomas just off the IR, Blake and he are not on the same page....those two must develop chemistry (like Brady has with his receivers) and very soon for Jax to win some games.......

lastly, my two cents....the real problem is that Jax is a bad team right now...it might be talent, it might be coaching but the buck stops with the GM and HC....they have to get this team headed in the right direction and hold the coaching staff and entire team accountable....right now they're not...Frenette's article should have focused on that.....

unfortunately it seems GOL and Bradley have something in common this year....

+1 if Jax would be that stupid teams would be lining up where he would go on to be a very good QB. His mechanics are fixed and his release looks good. He occasionally throws off his back foot when he's running for his life but he has all the physical tools to succeed in the NFL

Don't buy this crap..Bortles has already thrown more TD passes this year than he threw all of the last year.

1,630 yards 13 TDs 7 INTs (6 games) on pace for 4,346 yards 35 TDs 19 INTs
2,908 yards 11 TD's 17 INTs (14 games)

Yeah the interception number is still high, but his production has increased drastically. There is no doubt in my mind he is the Jaguars #1 player. Him and Allen Robinson are the #1 QB/WR duo statistically in the NFL. Allen Hurns is a solid #2 WR. Once Bortles gets in sync with Julius Thomas this offense will get even better. And to think the Jaguars passed up on Amari Cooper for a defensive end, one of their stronger positions.

If the Jaguars can go out and get another solid lineman for pass/run protection and another WR weapon Bortles will really flourish. Right now he is dealing with below average pass protection and no run game whatsoever. It's always much tougher to play QB when the running game poses no threat at all. (Reminds me of another team I follow)

Blake looks light years ahead of last year. The healthier Julius Thomas gets, the better it will be for him. T.Y. Jeldon will develop into an every down back by the end of the season and the Allens (Hurns and Robinson) are a very promising WR tandem. The future is bright, he just needs to stick it out. They've been competitive this year, at least.

In watching the games ... Bortles has so little support in the running game, and elsewhere, compared to the QBs he's facing.

Aaaaand here come the excuses for Blake....
No, I'm just saying Blake is performing well for a 2nd year QB. Had he had a better O-line and better running game to complement him at the Jaguars, he'd be performing even better.

I mean, Winston didn't look good in the Bucs game either, but was saved by his line and running game.

If he had this...if he had been drafted there....if his coaches did this....
Sounds like Kevin Smith-like denial is sprouting once again.
He's improved, no question. But the 2nd half has not been solid.

Although Kevin Smith also went to a crappy team.
