Air India Flight AI676 was en route to Mumbai from Kolkata on July 22 but was forced to divert to Nagpur when the crew became alarmed by the speed at which the aircraft was losing fuel thanks to the additional drag created by the extended wheels.

One of the major problems with Asian-based aircrews are 'team dynamics.'

Unlike here in the US, where an individual can challenge a superior, many Asian-based aircrews tend to be loyalty-like monarchies without question. And that leads to the biggest issue of all.

Since the '70s, US and European carriers have hammered 'team dynamics' and related 'training' into aircrews so there are multiple levels of redundancies and checks. This way, even when 'distracted,' important things -- like fuel and other, elementary aircraft state -- are not missed.

But in Asia, they still don't do much of that training, and these things happen far, far too often.
