"Senate Bill 274 would establish the Educator-Student Interaction Training Act and require one hour of training per year for educators on appropriate and inappropriate interaction between them and students. The training would be required to cover state laws and state and local polices and best practices regarding:

  • Sexual or romantic contact between educators and students;
  • Social media interactions;
  • Interactions outside school settings;
  • The use of physical restraint in the classroom."
But at least there's a voice of reason against the bill:

"A former teacher, Brewbaker said the bill is insulting to educators.

“The whole thing is absurd,” Brewbaker said this week. “We’re to the point where we have to tell teachers to keep their hands off of students? I mean, come on.”

Brewbaker said he was 22 when he was teaching 17 and 18 year olds.

“I knew to leave the people in the little desks alone,” he said. “Teachers who have inappropriate relations with students aren’t doing it because they don’t know it’s wrong
.”

Are we really to the point where we have to legislate against this? Isn't this already illegal?

You are missing the point. Someone will get paid big bucks to provide the training. Someone politically aligned with the sponsor. Someone who gave big bucks to the sponsors and the governor. Nobody can vote against it because they don't want to take the risk of their opposition being used as an election issue. So we get stuck with the bill. Madness.

Maybe they should screen job applicants a bit better. Not just in Alabama.

I hate when you succinctly point out how horrible our government is

Did you consider that maybe it's a cultural thing? Maybe they are all Syrian refugees.

At UCF, while I was getting my education degree a required course was Ethics in Education. Basically half the semester was spent on one idea:

DON'T HAVE SEX WITH YOUR STUDENTS!!!

A hard concept for some...
