This switch to thursday got me thinking and I had some downtime before dinner plans tonight. What's the effect of a thursday game vs. a saturday game on attendance?
Basically, nothing. See charts, sorry for the tiny picture, just click it to enlarge.
But here's what does matter: incoming win percentage, the better that we're doing, the more fans we have on average. Seems pretty obvious, but there's always been the feeling that our fans are more interested in seeing the opposing team, which is why we pack the house for all the big names. I estimate that our first game attendance this year will be 43,000.
I used score differential of the game as a proxy for opponent quality, I think it's pretty fair because we don't screw the pooch too badly at home. We generally win the games that we should at home, so the ones that were close are against pretty good and interesting opponents.
Also, temperatures don't seem to impact attendance at all, which was actually surprising to me. I think it's offset by the 'first game' effect, where we generally have better attendance at the start of a season, when temps are much higher.
