Anyone who never watched a UCF game in the Citrus Bowl as a Student

Was not a student, but a parent of student. Watched many games a Citrus bowl. My Fav was a loss, vs Va Tech.

Best thing was, Daughter got in for free, and Wife and I paid $5 to sit in student section with her.

Top 5 Pre-GOL losses I attended

5.1998 Loss to Auburn 6-10 when we were winning until the last play. Auburn went 3-8 in 1998
4.2002 loss to Syracuse 35-38 when we were up by more than 2 scores in the third quarter
3.1995 Loss to Liberty 6-7
2. 2003 loss to Ohio (not Ohio State) 0-28
1. 1986 loss to Wofford (who was NAIA) 28-31 at homecoming just before the big Beach Boys concert in front of what was then the largest crowd in UCF history.

Actually most of 2002 and 2003 was a complete mess. We were spiraling down a deep hole. No we never went 0-12, but the teams we beat were pretty pathetic. UCF, by all accounts, could easily be in the realm of the USMs and Marshalls of the world. If we had continued down the small time coach route.

You are not seriously coming in here to try to say GOL is responsible (even partially) for BHNS are you?

GOL was just around at the right time, that is all. Not statue worthy.

No I was not saying that he was not solely responsible for the move, but it was he was instrumental in moving it forward and the other facilities we have including a indoor facility, weight rooms etc. Summer school tuition for players, additional academic help, nutritionists etc. As part of his contract it required UCF to pledge to become a big boy program with a big boy commitment.
He is statute worthy. But not for another 5-10 years.

I attended games in the Citrus Bowl starting from 1986 :)

I remember losing to Wofford at UCF homecoming :-(

That's when the pain started! :) Just Kidding.

UCF as a whole, from the campus to the public opinion, is drastically different from that time period. Did GOL do that too or is more likely that he rode an enormous wave of improvement that Hitt lead?

Hmmmm... Seems like USF has made drastic steps forward in enrollment, endowment, public opinion since 2009 yet their football team has generally sucked. Could it be that there is no correlation between the two?? Hmmm... Seems that our baseball and basketball programs have not rode this seemingly all powerful wave of public opinion to the championship level despite upgrades in the athletic dept. and facilities. . In fact in many ways they are going the opposite direction. Could it be that it had something to do with the abilities of the coaching staff? No, that cant be. that make no sense at all.

I'll go further...if you don't remember watching NOON games at the Citrus Bowl with the team dressed in ALL BLACK uniforms and students dressed in fraternity colors instead of UCF gear.....you just would not understand.

If "your" QB was Daunte Culpepper and not Darren Hinshaw, you just would not understand.

Mine was Darin Slack and my receiver was Bernard Ford!

That was one of my favorites, too. I was a prof sitting in the student endzone section, and our tight end (forget his name) came over to the fans there to "celebrate." None of us left despite the score. It was the record crowd (48+K). The Hokies had like 4 passing yards, ran every play, as their dog-fighting QB was nursing an sore something. The thousands of the VaTech fans in the puke orange attire seemed surprised at seeing how dedicated fans act.

Does anyone remember throwing the rubber chicken around the stadium? and I mean by the stadium, the area right in front of the press box where you could actually talk to someone close to you. 8,000-10,000 fans in a 60,000 seat stadium. Makes me think I know what it is like to be a USF fan

Slack Attack!

One of the greatest football games I have ever attended is when we played Troy and incurred noise penalties. This includes taking my boys to the Louisville game when we upset them. There was something special about our formative years.

I recall how Arthur Andersen would set up this giant tent for PR and recruiting. They had all kinds of free stuff there. Then their auditing scandal with Enron caused the Dot.Com stock market crash and the accounting firm went under.
Then there were the games where UCF sent people ro round up drunken tailgaters who'd never make it inside to the game. I guess the AD was concerned back then that their attendance wouldn't be counted. Sounds so quaint today in this era of highly inflated attendance reports.

I was there for UCF's first season in 79 or 78. I never went to a game until the Houston game in '13 and had a great time! I am hooked forever!

Has no basis or perspective to judge GOL's success as a coach for UCF. You just would not understand.

Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes !!!!!! Remember 500 of us to see a game. Getting excited for Charlie batch from some Easter Carolina School. Or when we prevented UAB from scoring on us, and thought we won the Supjer Bowl. There is some perspective for ya ! Or how about watching Nicolos State During a tropical storm. Lol

If you were a student during UCF Div I-AA days when Sloan moved kickoff times to Noon/1 pm...you are still a youngster.:sunglasses:

To this day, that is still one of the dumbest UCF decisions at all time (even though UCF "moved up to Div I-AA", attendance for many games were cut in half with switch to early kickoff times)...as UCF was setting Div II Attendance records with their "normal" 7 pm kickoff times...especially when so many of UCF's "small" student body would work on Saturday/Sundays but could make most 7 pm kickoffs.
