Hardcore audiophiles are seriously some of the most batshit insane people out there. Honestly this is worse than chemtrails. These people think that bar codes, you know the lines printed on nearly every product sold, create some sort of field that prevents "allowing you to hear your audio system in all of it's present glory and power."

Even worse, there's companies out there that are completely stealing from these daft people by selling astronomically priced products like $10,000 Ethernet cables that claim to improve your listening experience. And people actually buy these things!

Beats I sorta get. Like mentioned, they're more than just headphones, they're a fashion statement. They are generally rated as being good headphones too. Overpriced still but not THAT much so. I'm by no means an audiophile but I do like a decent pair of headphones. The ones I use at work are actually Nokia/Monster headphones. They were on a pretty big sale so it made the price reasonable and I quite like them.

That said, Monster cables are a complete joke. It's just a way for Best Buy to massively overcharge on stuff to make up lost profits in other areas. Digital is digital. It will either work or it won't. The quality will not be any different from a $5.50 AmazonBasics cable vs a $99 Monster cable. Maybe the AmazonBasics will fall apart sooner? Certainly not enough difference to warrant the cost difference.

But holy shit. I thought everyone knew about this stuff by now. I assumed Best Buy would've largely stopped selling this crap but when I was writing this post I did a search and came across that one. Absolute insanity.

Have you seen the insulation on monster cables? That's what makes them so great. Monster cables are all I own.

Best Buy will continue selling them at $99 until people stop buying them. Period. It takes a person literally 5 minutes doing a Google search to quickly understand that a basic, low cost HDMI cable will provide the same quality as the Monster cables. If someone can't/won't do that most basic of search before plopping down $100 for a cable, then it's their problem. Not Best Buy's.

I think its been proven that the $200+ beats headphones are actually something like $50 quality.
People spend hundreds and and even thousands of dollars on shoes, handbags, etc that are objectively worth a whole lot less. I mean, truly, why does a diamond cost as much as it does? Surely not because of their usage as a machining tool.

I agree to some extent. The problem I have is with their store employees not being honest with customers. From the reviews...
Was told I needed this in order to watch my new 4k tv to its highest potential. I haven't hooked it up but I hope its worth it.
Obviously this could've been a friend that told them this but it's almost certainly an employee that did. Best Buy does sell cheap cables (one for $5.50 but looks like it's only available online, others for sub $20)

So long as there is SOME actual difference between the Monster and low cost HDMI, any difference, the employee is technically in the clear as far as the law is concerned. Of course this would have to be proven if they were ever challenged legally on that front.

This kind of reminds me of the gun range guy who gets a $4,000 MILSPEC rifle to plink on the weekend.

I'm not saying that Best Buy necessarily committed a crime and should be forced to stop selling these things but it's extremely unethical to tell someone to spend at least 5 times the amount needed on something for no benefit. Although if an employee did say that he "needed this in order to watch [his] new 4k tv to its highest potential" that would be a complete falsehood that is factually inaccurate. If they said it's a better cable that will last longer and that the lights are neat or some other junk then fine. His TV will not look or sound any better with that cable than a $5.50 AmazonBasics, Monoprice, etc cable.
