Does anyone watch these? To me they seem to have some celebrity ass kissing award show every month. Since I'm traveling I decided to try to watch the Golden Globes, four anti Trump comments in the first ten minutes, can't do it.

I've never understood Hollywood worship. What happens in their lives has never been a concern. 90% of them are so far out of touch with reality it pains me to watch this crap.

for a community who claims to be as inclusive and accepting as the Hollywood crowd claims to be, I find it amusingly ironic that they still segregate awards by gender.

Back to the OP's question and avoiding the political pissing match because there's far too much of that coming from both sides - I typically watch the opening. Then, depending on what else is on - and if I'm even watching t.v. after the monologue - I may flip back and forth to see who's winning what; but, really I just pay attention to the nominees anymore to see if there's a film out there I missed. Typically there isn't because it's generally all the big houses that get the nominees anyway, but occasionally one will have slipped through my radar. These days I really pay closest attention to the nominees at Cannes, Sundance, TIFF, etc.
The masters of the arts at Sundance heaped praise and awards on a movie which featured a weirdo stuck on an island, and a corpse he finds that farts throughout the entire movie and has strange homo-erotic experiences with.
I didn't say that I enjoy every film that's nominated. Hell, I don't even watch 50% of them; but, typically the fests are about the best barometer there is for films that are at least worth a look-see. And, I don't know how much I'd agree that praise was heaped on the film (there were a record number of "walkouts" during the premiere) - it only took the top directorial prize. You don't have to like the movie or its plot to be able to appreciation the art of direction. For instance, I don't care for the Lord of the Rings movies; but, there's no denying what Peter Jackson accomplished as director (see: 2003 Academy Awards).

The award shows are what's garbage. Most of the awards go to artsy shit that few people watch and even fewer enjoy. I refuse to watch award shows because it's self flagellation for the people who are already getting lots of publicity and they serve as confirmation bias for the weak-minded who need to know what they like as also liked by others. I know what I like and I couldn't care less what the Hollywood press or actors guild thinks of what they produced. My dollars gave my vote.
