Manning up in difficult circumstances is not easy. Nonetheless, there is a pattern here of
GOL being good at climbing out of holes, although we have the right to ask "why did it get this bad?"
Recently, we've had more consistency with wins but this season has been the
perfect storm of bad circumstances: 1) max exodus of seniors; 2) injuries to remaining stars;
3) unusual attrition (O'Leary isn't popular) and 4) two new coordinators on both sides of the ball.
What does back to the drawing board for GOL look like?
Season 1 - it is tough to stomach and looks llike a mad scientist in the laboratory but a bunch
of inexperienced players get playing time until things start to gel (and coaches replaced
during the off season);
Season 2 - back to .500 and possible bowl season;
Season 3 - start to talk serious about ranking again;
Season 4 - hope that nobody leaves and talk more about ranking.
This is the known commodity you get with George at UCF:
1) It includes high probability that you will have a down season because our
conservative game planning doesn't get us a lot of depth with experience;
2) Whenever we get good coordinators under George they have a tendency
to get plucked away (Taafe was exception) so holding onto them is hard;
3) When players and fans are willing to hang in their it gets better (don't help the naysayers);
4) Players go to the NFL.
Can we get a better coach? Yes and certainly I'm getting tired of the GOL pattern but
look at the pattern USF has been following. That's the type of coaches that are out there.
Whoever stays on this team will be rewarded with bowl games and championships
but not this year. With everything a price has to be paid. It's certainly difficult being
a UCF fan this season but look at previous Gator and Miami seasons before you
hit the eject button on George. Remember, he wont be here forever and long term fans
will outlast him
and might even be thankful for him. I know hard to swallow right now,
I'm gritting my teeth this season.
