I plan on booking the Stanford trip/game but I also have to visit relatives in San Deigo.

I'm still trying to figure this one out because of the traffic situation in CA.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Between this post and your wrestling one the other day, you may be the biggest dolt on these boards. And that's saying something.

Depends on where you are staying after the Stanford game

Should be plenty of options from San Jose or Oakland or San Fran.

I lived in San Diego for 4 years. Those cities are not close at all. Very rough and hectic but scenic drive in spots. Advice..., book flight or drive overnight.

OP, can you explain how long you plan on being in Cali? I lived there most of my life(Bay area, actually 12 years in Palo Alto). Like Mike said, its 8 to 8 1/2 hr drive to San Diego. I wouldn't do it. But if tight on money, you can wake up early and be there easily by late afternoon. Flying would probably only set you back less than $100. If you want to know anything else, let me know. Palo Alto and San Diego..some of the most expensive places to live in the country!

yes, Cali is 3 states states in one....So Cal, Central Valley(Fresno area) and Nor Cal. So Cal is very different than most of the Nor Cal/bay area. Btw, Californian's call San Francisco..."the City", or San Fran. Some of the best food in the world in San Fran...especially Mexican and Thai! I miss the food there. I

Damn! Wasn't going to go. Now I'm reconsidering.

Bass, I don't think I would attempt to drive it. Going to try and combine the Stanford game with a visit with family in San Diego....only a day or so visit in San Diego so I am not even sure it's feasible

Thanks to OP for posting and Bass', etc., for adding commentary.

We recently flew into SD then drove up I-5 to LA before taking a left to the Pacific Highway near Oxnard, CA.

The 8 hour drive took us 4 days, and I loved every minute driving up Hwy 1. The landscapes and Pacific ocean vistas are awesome. We took a right, north of San Fran and finished our drive in Santa Rosa.

We have tentative plans to fly to San Fran right after FIU game to camp out at Moss Landing, and check out more of the Central Valley prior to Stanford game.

PS: Stanford opened their stadium in 2006. They have a beautiful venue and constantly improving the ambience. UCF supporters will really be impressed.

ProAttitude...nice! sounds like a good time. Driving on Hwy 1, IS the way to go. Some very nice views! I will say I like the beaches and ocean way more here in Florida. The sand sucks in CA and the water is cold as hell(San Diego is better). When you do get in the water, their are a lot of rocks and seaweed too.

Did you like Santa Rosa? I spent two years their going to JC and playing football. Good memories...long time ago!

If people are going to the Stanford game...you HAVE to do this....

Drive about 1 hour to Carmel. Then go on 17 mile drive(right on the coast and by Pebble Beach golf course). One of the nicest area's in the entire country. Trust me. If any females are going, they will L.O.V.E. Carmel and the whole area around there.

I like Florida better than Cali though! :) As my handle suggests, I love fishing and its about 1,000 better here. And college football of course!

College football in California...is NIL. Only USC has fans. Stanford!?hahah....they can't even fill there 50K new stadium most games and they are good now. Cali is all about pro football. I remember growing up I was the only one who liked college football. All my friends were 49er, raiders or some other team fans.

Sorry about the rambling

Santa Rosa was a day trip on Hwy 37 and return to Benecia on 116, then 37 again.

Santa Rosa visit consisted of Johnny Garlics for lunch then Russian River Brewery in downtown. They just release Piny the Elder beer. Lines were two blocks long but we had special access. We met a UCF Alum from New York while waiting our turn to buy. Small world.

Looking forward to many more trips to Cali.....

Don't waste the money on 17 mile drive unless you really want to see the golf clubs. The drive through Pacific Grove and Asilomar is 10 x's better and free. Carmel is what winter park wishes it was ... Worth the visit, bring your spending money!

17 mile drive is great...(Spanish Bay is great) cool homes...amazing views...good excuse to finish and enjoy a drink inside the Pebble Beach Loge at the Tap Room on your way to Carmel.

I've played both Spanish Bay and Pebble...both courses are easily worth a visit.

Bass, from FL, live in the area now.

KL, 17 mile Dr. Is only 10 bucks (if you have to pay) so no big deal to do to say you have done it. PG to Asilomar is basically the same views and more of it. So, like I said, if you are not into the golf aspect, you wouldn't be missing out. FWIW, I prefer sitting at Stix at SB over Tap ... But doing both at each end is a good choice too :)

Great area, tons of outdoor activities, never too hot or too cold. Water is cold but a good wetsuit goes a long way

It is 1.5 to 2 hours to Stanford so worth spending the night or two if you are making a long trip out of it.
