Can't say I really disagree with him here. Never really made sense to me having to make him OC for one year just to be the next HC. They were also talking about it on his show this morning and mentioned how UCF assistant salaries aren't that great. Is that a function of GOL's salary taking up much of the budget? Would a Key or someone else not commanding a GOL salary have more to spend on assistants?

Bianchi: O'Leary should have hired experienced offensive coordinator
In hindsight, UCF coach George O’Leary’s biggest mistake was naming his trusted offensive line coach Brent Key as the offensive coordinator.

This is not to say that Key is the reason UCF is 0-5, but it was short-sighted on O’Leary’s part to replace a veteran playcaller like the retiring Charlie Taaffe with Key, who had no real experience in implementing an offensive game plan and calling plays.

Besides the head coach himself, offensive coordinator is the most important member of your coaching staff. Why not go out and hire the best coordinator available instead of letting Key try to learn on the job?

In fairness, Key’s tenure as offensive coordinator has been riddled by injuries, but UCF’s offense has been the worst in the country since Game 1 before the injuries really began to take their toll. Key is a good guy and a hard worker, but as the great Bill Parcells once said, “You are what your record says you are.” And UCF's record right now is 0-5 and the Knights are dead last among the 127 FBS schools in total offense. Worse yet, they are playing in a league – the American Athletic Conference – that has four of the top 10 offenses in the country.

In contrast, look what’s happened to Ohio State’s offense since veteran offensive coordinator Tom Herman became the head coach at Houston this season. Herman has immediately turned the Cougars into one of the most explosive offenses in the country while Ohio State’s offense has struggled in his absence.

I get that Key is the hand-chosen successor to take over the UCF program when O’Leary decides to retire, but that doesn’t mean he needed to be the offensive coordinator. He could have just as easily taken over the program if he would have remained as as the offensive line/associate head coach.
