Big 12 Expansion Article - UT against (shocker)

Wouldn't the Big12 be better served to stoke the excitement that expansion creates with tons of intrigue and speculation and then expand soon and change the news cycle from Baylor's scandal to the future of the P5? Just coming out and saying "we're all pretty horrified and depressed about the Baylor scandal" sure isn't going to help perceptions about the league.

Booting Texas is not such a crazy idea.
They take more from the conference than they provide.

No other conference will touch them until they drop the LHN.

Then they could add a B12 network and more $ for everyone else

They've already said they'd drop the network in a second should another conference come calling. BUT, Texas isn't the only team that wants out of the Big 12. Try to find 4 that want to stay. It's far easier to move into a conference where the other teams have already done the heavy lifting then to actually try to improve the conference you're in. In that respect, Big 12, welcome to the G6 mentality.

Texas and Oklahoma are leaving. No P5 is joining the B12. It's inevitable. The other schools should secure the conference if they aren't lucky enough to leave with them. You'd rather have a strong Cincinnati, USF, UCF, Memphis, etc that can pick up the pieces.

Why don't we just stay in the AAC. Let UT and OU leave the Big 12. Pick up the teams worth anything like Kansas, Baylor, TCU, Kansas State and OSU and add them to the AAC. Then dump the bottom three in the AAC and call it a day. That would be a nice conference.

Yes, I'm dreaming.

Some form of this happens. After Texas and Ok leave (Ok State may leave to as a package deal), I think a "best of the rest" conference emerges either under the AAC or Big 12 banner. Best of the AAC, Big 12 remnants, and Boise form a pretty respectable 16 team conference.

Maybe something like this?:

East: UCF, USF, WVU, Navy/Temple, Cincinnati, UConn, Memphis, Houston

West: TCU, Baylor, SMU, Texas Tech, Kansas State, Kansas, Boise, Iowa State

I'm trying not to get my hopes up, because I think Texas is going to ruin it for everyone. But even if UCF doesn't get an invite, I will still renew my season tickets, I will still party like a beast before the games, and I will still have a great time as always at the games. So if UCF doesn't get the invite, life goes on. And think about this, if UCF does get an invite, season ticket prices will go up significantly.

Or, take the remaining 7 schools (drop Iowa State)from the Big 12 and move them to the AAC. Plus take the best 9 schools from the AAC and call it a day. Drop Tulane, Tulsa and 1 more.

What about WVU. Can't leave them out. Drop Navy/Temple. Then you have your conference.

Bohls: A softer, kinder, pro-Big 12 David Boren emerges from league meetings

Posted June 2nd, 2016

IRVING — David Boren may not hold all the cards when it comes to the Big 12’s future. But the Oklahoma president probably holds half of them. And you-know-who holds the other half of the deck.

Boren played his latest hand Thursday at the end of the day’s meetings and had clearly softened his hard-line stance of the previous months. He’s flush with excitement over the future.

He’s all in with the Big 12.

He made that abundantly clear without any of the fiery rhetoric that riled up Sooners fans and many in the league who feel expansion is the only solution to saving the league and propping it up against the bigger banks that are the SEC and the Big Ten.

“I think our conference is extremely strong. I want to underline that,” said Boren, the chairman of the Big 12 board of directors. “We’ve been through some choppy periods in the past, but I don’t think our conference has ever been stronger. Our relationships are strong. There never has been a stronger commitment.

“We’re going to have to sort through all possible strategies. Everything will be considered. I’d rather be right than hasty.”

Because Boren seemed to see the Big 12 in a different light than when he labeled his league “psychologically disadvantaged” in February, his change of heart or softening — coupled with Texas’ clear stance — could put the Big 12 in yet another holding pattern.

Texas President Gregory L. Fenves echoed athletic director Mike Perrin’s strong anti-expansion, anti-Big 12 Network sentiments. He told the American-Statesman on Thursday that he continues to view the league as a strong conference and one that wouldn’t necessarily be enhanced by growing to 12 members.

Perrin mentioned on Wednesday that he thought Boren was softening his stance.

“I think he’s backed off of that, even in recent weeks,” he said.
This was clearly a kinder, gentler David Boren.

He also backed off his much-circulated quote about the Big 12 being “psychologically disadvantaged” and said it wasn’t imperative that every league have the exact same financial situations “penny for penny.”

And he hinted that the Big 12 financial intake, which will be revealed Friday when the meetings conclude, will be much rosier than some have suggested.

Is anyone gonna stand up and ask UT why they are being a giant douche?

Don't get me wrong, I know exactly why they are doing what they are doing but no one seems to wanna address the elephant in the room.

2001-2009 was a pretty good run for Texas, now they are stuck in mediocrity.

It's only a matter of time. Some how, some way, UCF will wind up in a Power Conference. Location, tv market, enrollment, fan/alumni support, Olympic sports offerings, academics. It's all there. Have no fear. It's a matter of time. Get back to winning games and everything will work itself out.

Yeah I realized that and fixed it

The problem with the Big 12 Conference:

Texas and the fact that 60% of the Conference members (Oklahoma,Oklahoma State,Kansas,Kansas State,Iowa State and West Virginia) come from states that have a combined population of about 10 million.

Texas likes a 10 member conference and their own LHN.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

What's the real danger? -- the 800 pound gorilla in the P-5 room. That it becomes a P-4 with 16 teams each and the Big 12 either disappearing or demoted to AAC status, or worse yet, C-USA of wannabees and also rans. That would finally lock in stability, end raiding, and exactly split up Division I-A in half (64 in each), which the NCAA would declare as official. If Oklahoma and Texas leave, that will be the de facto situation. The only ones left in the Big 12 the other conferences would want for sure are Kansas and perhaps Oklahoma State or K State (remember that Kansas and Oklahoma state budgets are still bleeding from low oil prices). Baylor may have invited being left out of the mix by it's national shame as it's lack of a market. Ironically, such a move would improve BYU's chances of getting into the Big 10. Meanwhile, UCF Provost's drive to dramatically improve our research and graduate program size and stature might attract the Big 10, too, finally giving them access to the Florida recruiting market they depend on!

Of course they like that setup. Question is why do the other 9 go along with it? Does Texas Tech not want to piss off their mommy in case she might drag them to a new conference.

I'd be PROACTIVE...DON'T WAIT for the Big-12 to implode...Let them FAIL...When they do...REPLACE THEM...On the P-5 Food Chain!!!

Take the Best Teams and Metro's from the AAC/CUSA/INDY/MAC/MWC etc...and CREATE a TRUE National Conference...Set up in Pods...With Permanant Cross Pod Rivals...Then Rotate the other Three Pod Teams every three years!!!

North Pod
Cincinnati, Connecticut (NE Market), Northern Illinois (Chicago Market), Temple.

East Pod

Central Florida, East Carolina (Parts of NC and Virginia Markets), South Florida, Southern Miss.

Central Pod

Colorado State (Part of Denver Market), Houston, Memphis, Tulsa.

West Pod

Boise State, BYU, Fresno State, San Diego State.

Permanant Cross Pod Rivals
Cincinnati, Central Florida, Memphis, Boise State.

Connecticut, East Carolina, Houston, BYU.

Northern Illinois, Southern Miss, Colorado State, San Diego State.

Temple, South Florida, Tulsa, Fresno State.

Look at the Recruiting Grounds for that conference set-up...California, Florida, Illinois, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas and Utah...That's NOT too bad!!!

Something to consider if I'm a G-5 Team...Either FIGHT to be INCLUDED...Or DIE...CONTROLL your OWN Destinies!!!
