Biggest Surprise

Walter Yates III ranks 7th in the team in tackles. I expected Jason Johnson to be a shining star. I am not surprised he is the team's leading tackler. However, I was surprised Yates even received an opportunity to play at UCF. He has made the most of it.

Honorable Mention: Javon Baker has made an incredible impact despite joining the team just weeks before fall camp. During the first four weeks of the season, UCF could have ran one man routes with Baker and max protected for JRP with the other 9 offensive players because Baker was the only potential target anyway.

Biggest Disappointment

Terrence Lewis and Brandon Jennings have combined for 2 tackles. No player in UCF history has had more written of him to have accomplished nothing than Lewis. He had one big hit during the offseason, then fizzled out. Jennings, meanwhile, made two assists on routine tackles and celebrated like he hit the mega millions jackpot both times.

Honorable Mention: Mikey Keene is taking a forced redshirt. A future NFL franchise quarterback like Keene shouldn't be concerned with taking a red shirt. He will be draft eligible next season.

Hasn't this joke gone too far by this point?

I guess you saw a bunch of Troy Green posts and thought they were funny enough to re-set.

I thought it was pretty damn funny.

I like Keene. I think he should be splitting possessions with Plumlee every game. I'm pissed he isn't.

Still though, I can laugh at this bizarre situation. A high profile player like Keene, who was the team's only returning starter who lost his job before the opening kickoff, opts out playing football to retain a year of eligibility that he isn't sure he will be granted if he is forced into action.

High profile players dont have long slow windups. He is hardly prolific. NFL qbs need to be able to escape pressure and deliverpasses into tight windows. Keene cant do either

You're right, a lot of high profile players have a year of redshirt first to get mechanics worked out.

I don't think you can make determinations like that based on a partial true freshman season.

the redshirt rules aren't like they were in the past where you could only play in the first 4 games, now it's any 4 games. since he hasn't played in any game yet if we make it to game 8 unscathed he can play in any regular season game after that without messing with his redshirt if gus feels forced.

The 4 game rule is only a few years old.

the any 4 game rule is only a few years old, but before that you could be medically redshirted if you only played in the first 4 games.

anyway keene won't lose eligibility if he's forced to play in less than 4 games this season and that's what i was responding to in auburn's post.

Biggest Disappointment...Losing to Louisville

Brandon Jennings and Terrence Lewis might be my biggest disappointments this year so far.

Jennings redshirting, he’s as good as gone…

Interesting that Hester was injured. TWill was asked about Hester and he said "that's not something for me to talk about" or something similar. Would have been easier to just say he's banged up.

Is it a real injury or a Jay Flash injury?

Biggest surprise: How great RJ Harvey looks coming back after his injury.
Biggest disappointment: The frequency of pass interference commited by our DBs who are in great position for an INT but refuse to turn around and find the ball. Also that this is a very "coachable" issue.
RJ still the best back and he had a year off for rehabbing

I agree it was interesting. I'm guessing that his condition was still being evaluated, or T Will had been advised not to comment until further information was released.

Biggest surprises:
+Defense is legit
+Linebackers look solid, including 2 FCS guys
+T Will is the real deal
+Recruiting
+2nd Quarter dominance vs SMU
+Gus is a true players coach

Biggest Disappointments:
-How short sighted players who want to transfer are
-Loss to Louisville
-Lack of Offensive creativity. Until SMU Q3, it didn't feel like we could actually move the ball. Maybe a product of new QB, OL, and Wr's and things finally clicking.

Biggest Surprise:
- Holy smokes we might have a championship defense
- Plumlee is a more capable thrower than I anticipated
- Kicking bombs and kissing your Moms
- TMB consistently looking the part
- JJB stepping up bigly without TB

Biggest Disappointment:
- Our veteran OL has looked extremely pedestrian
- Mystifying play calling at times still
- WR drops

Our loss to Louisville is by far the biggest disappointment, but mostly because we all knew Boomer was the better kicker and we would be undefeated and ranked if he was kicking since week 1.
Mahlzahn had said he was hurt - that and wanting to give an opportunity to reward the good performance at the gasparilla bowl would be my guesses as to why the delay.

I took another listen to Gus's press conference, and he described it as a "health status issue".

Clearly saying injured or banged up is a lot easier and more straightforward.

Combined with T Will's description, it doesn't sound like a football injury, rather, a medical condition.

Noticed that as well - odd way to describe it, but that was my conclusion as well.

Agree … Keene … is not an NFL QB … 5’11” no speed and a windup that makes slow DBs look fast …

Looking at our program from “40k ft”, in 2004 we transitioned from having a football team to having a football program. Since then we moved up, now, three conferences, won a bunch of hardware along the way and have so far made good coaching hires. Unlike many programs such as Arizona, Rutgers, etc… we continue to give a shit and don’t seem “happy” with just collecting “L’s” and a paycheck. As a fan, this is much appreciated because if we acted like aforementioned programs, personally, I would not give a rats ass about football and would not spend my hard-earned money (and time) on such a costly thing such as season tickets, traveling to away games, etc… OR spending my time jawing about it on a fan forum.

There’s always nit-picking but nobody is running our program into the ground because we have prioritized the program over any person.

When changes occurred at the top, so far, we’ve acted in ways to maintain momentum and growth in the football program.

This is a good point. I think it is also why we pulled back within 3 pts in the last football game. Sometimes people will say on Bama is so lucky or what not. The thing is when you build a program it becomes harder for lesser programs to beat a single team from a better program even if they are better

Very insightful.

Nice compilation Matt!

I think the biggest surprise of the season was… Boomer! It was nice to have some confidence again when trotting out the kicker for FGs under 40 yards. We haven’t had that since Matty Ice. Super impressed with him coming in there as a true freshman and not letting the pressure get to him for any of his kicks.
