UCF should have hired Bill Brechin from Miami (OH). He’s a very bright up and coming DC. BUT, he’s a free thinker and a rising star in the college ranks…something Malzahn fears like nothing else.

Miami played Miami OH first game of 2023 and the Canes beat writers where high on him and his defense. His defense is aggressive, very tough against the run, brings pressure and makes tackles.

They were very tough in the first half but the Miami OH offense could not do anything…leaving the defense on the field all game long. By the middle of Q3 Brechin’s defense was worn out.

But, but Ted Roof. UCF could have hired Brechin for less but he’s not a Malzahn guy. Welp.

No. 1, this guy has been up north his whole life and has no ties to UCF or Gus. How can he recruit South Florida?

No. 2, he has been a coordinator at only one program and doesn't even coach linebackers.

The problem within college football coaching is that it is described as a "Fraternity". Head Coaches especially within the P5 hire people they know or have been associated with. For example, in 2015, yes, George O'leary's last season coaching, UCF needed a Defensive Coordinator and O'Leary hires Chuck Bresnahan, but yet Bresnahan was just fired by Willie Taggart after 2 seasons of terrible stats as Defensive Coordinator at usf. Why did O'Leary hire someone that didn't do well at usf, because O'Leary and Bresnahan had worked together in the past at Georgia Tech.

No ties to Gus, UCF, or the South and quite frankly less defensive coordinator experience than Addison Williams, who needs someone to hold his hand. Welp, that about covers it.
