Brazil Election

From what I read a week ago, he's still expected to lose in the runoff election but he's already setting the stage to call the election a scam.

Unfortunately, Brazil is a VERY corrupt country with a lot of problems.

He is SCARY for women and LGBT people in Brazil. I'm not talking Trump scary, I'm talking actually scary.

friend of a family member that used to live in Florida now is back living in Sao Paulo

I have always found Brazil as an interesting country to follow and with massive potential. Their history has a lot of parallels with America's.

“BRAZIL’S DONALD TRUMP” WINS BRAZILIAN PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION
By Kevin Ryan

Jair Bolsonaro, a conservative often compared to President Trump, has swept to victory in Brazil’s presidential election, joining the growing ranks of antiestablishment leaders being elected across the world. Bolsonaro had 56% of the vote, while Fernando Haddad of the leftist Workers’ Party was far behind with 44%.

Just a few years ago Brazil was considered a staunchly left-wing nation. Former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva pushed through generous welfare programs and labor rights, but ended up behind bars on corruption charges, and the support for his long-ruling Workers’ Party collapsed.

Bolsonaro’s political views have been described as nationalist, populist, and far-right in nature. He and his supporters, however, claim that his views are more aligned with traditional right-wing conservatism and classically liberal economics. He maintains a strong opposition to left-wing policies, including same-sex marriage, abortion, immigration, drug liberalization, and affirmative action. He says he supports easing the restrictions on firearm ownership. He says he will push to privatize state-owned companies and advocates free market policies. Many in the business community have backed Bolsonaro and his economic guru, the University of Chicago-trained Paulo Guedes.

He's what a lot of liberals here make Trump out to be. He's the real deal though....unless he changes his tune when he gets into office. It doesn't sound like he will though.

On women:
"I wouldn't rape you because you don't deserve it." - to a congresswoman.

"I've got five kids but on the fifth I had a moment of weakness and it came out a woman."

On LGBT:
"I would be incapable of loving a homosexual son."

Bolsonaro went onto add he would rather his son "died in an accident than showed up with some bloke with a moustache."

Sounds like Duterte.

Brazil is a wonderful country that has been utterly destroyed by leftist policies and corruption amongst most everyone in government. Everyone. They should by all accounts have one of the best economies on earth yet they’re in deep shit due to the decades of mismanagement and corruption.

As FYI- the guy who won was nearly killed after being stabbed in the street by a leftist opposition member

Brazil probably saw what was going on to their north in shithole Venezuela and decided it was time to go a different route

not sure how credible this is but if true wtf Brazil

I'm going to play devil's advocate here:

"Socialism can work, its just that it was the wrong guy in charge" is something we always hear from socialism advovates when Russia, China, etc. are brought up. Now replace the word socialism with fascism. Who's to say fascism is so bad as a system? Maybe it was just the wrong people in charge.

except for the literal 2 base case scenarios for socialism to work both happened here in the us and they were both failures.

This issue in Brazil, Venezuela and other Latin America countries on a smaller scale is corruption. The scandal with the previous President is common. So it's not exactly telling the entire story when the Isms fears are being used here for political points.

Corruption is more damaging when the biggest company in the country is 70% owned by the government and operates as a slush fund for the politicians who have a majority stake in ownership.

The story is the same in these leftist/socialist countries- they nationalize the largest industries, make sure they and their friends are made wealthy from it, and drive the economy into the gutter by mismanaging the major industries in the country.
