Brent Key to Coach OL at Alabama

Personally I think GOL put Key into a no win situation. He was a good OL coach for UCF. It was only when he became OC did the o-line really start to suffer. He could have been a very good head coach, the players seemed to like him but he was a terrible OC. If GOL let him do what he was good at, 0-12 May have never happened.

And if Hitt had let GOL do what he was good at (retiring to sit at home and read books), or if GOL had let stanback do what he was good at (light the herb) then 0-12 may never have happened.

Are you saying Key did not want to become OC and GOL made him become OC? First time I heard that.

...and if 0-12 had not happened then Key would likely now be our head coach and there would be no end to the downward spiral...

I'm not saying Key didn't want to be OC. He just wasn't good at it. Nor am I saying that I'm upset we now have a new direction under Frost. I wish it didn't have to come from an 0-12 season but the change is good. All I'm saying is Key was a good o-line coach and should have just stayed there. Moving to OC was a mistake and he probably realizes it now.

Wish Barrett and other former coaches like Summers well but not Key. Classless on the way out after GOL was forced out

His ceiling is as a position coach and he wasn't even good at that for the last few years

Did I miss something? He was obviously a dead man walking once GOL retired and he still finished out the season.

cleaned out his office and stopped game planning weeks before the season was over, was the source of the incorrect media report that Frost wasn't retaining any GOL assistants, is a douchebag in general, etc

Another bad move. He is now going to replace the coach whose OL won the NC and produced the Heisman trophy winner. Good Luck Brent!

Yes., the guy was classless and didn't finish strong and with any professionalism. I don't know all the details, but it appears that he basically abandoned the team. He really showed a bland, arrogant and cocky personaltty in an OS interview which was a real turnoff. He had to realize that he wasn't doing a good job (but didn't) and was getting a buyout. Things didn't workout. so at least finish strong for the players. Isn't that what the coaching staff was preaching for the last few years.

Amazing how Alabama can see something in him over Cristobal. I guess when you're that succesfull, even the slightest flaws that aren't apparent to anyone gets you demoted or your coaching position changed. Really nowhere to go but down for Key as Alanama was pretty damn good already on the offensive line.

Key had some good lines over the years but the final 2 they went downhill. The bad was his offense (that goes without saying). Didn't he turn down Bama a few years ago and GOL promptly promoted him to Assistant HC?

Two good things for him:
1) financially this should be big for his family (double dipping);
2) he will prove he is a good OL coach with better talent.

What plays you call makes a big difference in how your line performs. GOL and Keys don't know what plays to call but Taafe and Kiffin do.

Good! I was getting tired of seeing Alabama in the SEC title game and in the National Championship game. It will be good to see them as a mid-level SEC team as long as he is around.

I don't agree. You and I can coach Alabama's line to be decent.

Also, our offensive line in 2014 and 2015 was terrible regardless of the plays that were called.

I'm just saying...when I first spoke to Key during an open practice session last year, I was like...wow...he's really goofy. Not what I expected for HC material.

Except for screens, our offense line executed screen blocking perfectly every down.
