Can the American conference turn early success into something bigger?

This is definitely a bad time for UCF to be this horrible. Its not the first time though.

from the article -
South Florida’s win over Syracuse pushed the American conference to 4-3 against the ACC this season. The league boasts three undefeated teams. It has beaten teams from three Power 5 conferences, with the potential for more Saturday, when one of those perfect teams, Memphis, hosts Ole Miss of the SEC.

“I thought we competed the last few years, but we didn’t win as many nonconference games as we’re winning now,” said Aresco, the American commissioner since its 2012 makeover from the old Big East.

Even our commissioner wants the conference champion to do better than just win its own title. This is the opposite of the GOL supporters who love to grasp onto our 4 conference titles but ignore our horrible 7-23 record against the P5, 3-23 when you remove the 2013 season - the only year we were in the BCS and 2-8 against them during our 3 conference title runs..3-8 if you want to include BYU. We couldnt get it done on all levels and now we've hit rock bottom.

If we were a top 5 G5 - to be honest articles have pointed out we were closer to Top 10 than Top 5 - it would be Boise State #1, NIU #2 and then a steep drop to everyone else. Its sad that these people who cling to their conference titles and GOLism's can't see the forest from the trees. You are too happy to win titles in a weak performing conference (and then we contribute little to nothing when it comes to interconference play vs the BCS/AQ/P5) and latch on to GOLs dry humor and direct personality, but forgot that we hired him because we got fed up with scoring fast on teams like Syracuse when Coach Kruz was around only to fade away or lose close at the end to Arkansas, Auburn, South Carolina, the list goes on and on.

I don't think any GoL nuthugger ignores those facts.

I certainly don't ignore those facts. We suck at P5 games. We need to do better.

But what seems to happen with haters is when they try and bolster/validate getting rid of him, they minimize all of his accomplishments (like removing the 2013 season from his stats, or branding that year as just an anomaly due to amazing players, which he recruited, but not giving him credit for that, and essentially saying conference championships and bowl victories mean nothing, etc.)

See how that works?

The problem with your argument is that it doesnt take much finagling to prove his mediocrity. Look I was happy for 2013 and i wanted GOL to go for the kill in 2014 and take us over the hump and lead us to G5 top echelon...but we lost to Penn State in the last minute with our defense allowing a last second FG and we got out talented by a young 7-5 NC State in our bowl. Sure we dominated conference, but as my argument implies we always do. Its just we dont do any favors for the American based on our performance OOC...especially against the P5.

Thats what i really wished would happen but it didnt and now we cant beat FCS and lowly CUSA teams. GOL had 12 years. He's collected millions of dollars from us. He needs to go.

In other words ... when GoL loses, he deserves to get fired. Doesn't matter what he does.

In fact, you have 4 other seasons (2004, 2006, 2008 and 2011) to justify such. GoL should never be allowed to have a "rebuilding" year. After all, there is not only Boise State, but we should be better than a lot of P5s every year, right?

And how many coaches get down years that are paid even more? Quite a lot! And they are still held on for 3, even 4 years sometimes!

I can see GoL getting canned if we suck next year too. That would be back-to-back loosing seasons, something he's never done.

No in your words you think thats what im saying but ive already responded to that crap.*

0-6 isn't a rebuilding year, it's a dumpster fire.
Okay, let's call it a dumpster fire. Do any and all coaches get fired after starting 0-6? Especially when they've won 9+ games the prior 3 years, with division/conference titles each year?

What about 0-12? Does that eradicate the prior 3 years?

I'm just asking because be careful what you guys wish for. I'm still high on our last 2 recruiting classes to make us look good 2017+. But I know you guys don't want to give O'Leary any more time.

And some of you never wanted him, or at least not after 2006 or 2008.

.500 is a rebuilding year. You don't go from good to terrible in the span of a year unless you suck as a coach. At any school with you bet your arse the AD would be like WTF is going on dude? Oh that's right. It's GOL asking GOL that question.

Or you lose a lot of graduating kids, followed by 2 poor recruiting classes from our post-NCAA investigation. That's exactly what we had happen, even before the injuries.

The question before the season was ... we're we rebuilding or reloading? I figured we might be rebuilding. Understand this was before the injuries. Could we have been 0.500 had we not had the injuries? Maybe, or possibly not 0.500, but 4-8. The problem is ... people would want him fired for that alone, which I take serious issue with.

But then we got decimated with injuries. People can complain it has nothing to do with it, and even question the recruiting overall. But don't ignore the last 2 classes ... lots of talented freshmen and, now, redshirt freshmen in those camps. I'm tired of people lambasting those kids, who are talented, but just inexperienced, even making really dumb mistakes at times.

Some of it is coaching. I think we all saw that against FIU too. And that's okay to question. But this "garbage" that I keep seeing come out, saying our freshmen talent sucks and basically wanting to fire GoL even before Furman, was really what was making me question.

He's not interim AD any more. But you're not going to see him fired immediately by the interim AD. And he should not be. A lot of you wish to will it so, even before the Furman loss, but I don't think you realize how it looks.

In fact, I just want GoL to retire so you guys can have your way, solving Hitt's issue for you. Although if some of these kids are kicking butt in 2017, the same ones a lot of you were lambasting, I don't want to hear it was all about the coaching. No, we had 2 good recruiting classes, without Kelly, with Key and GoL.
