The TV money train keeps runnin!

15 year deal worth at least $1B, they'll eventually get over $60M per year just in fees, the Cardinals also get a minority stake in the company, and they're getting a massive signing bonus up front.

$1B for one team, with one carrier.

It makes sense for Fox since STL has one of the largest geographic viewing areas in sports.

It is dying. Old people have money. In 15-20 years when all the current old people are dead baseball will shrink even more unless they make changes.

So, Whata, the Rays should be looking at $50M/per on their new deal, right?

Soccer is a sport that only really works in third-world countries or places where socialism rules. The people in these places are far too stupid to figure out something as complicated as baseball. So soccer will never work in the States.

That is just a crazy deal TV deal. For some reason the TV numbers for baseball continue to go down, but the TV contracts just keep going up.

I don't know how much longer you guys will continue throwing out unsupported, false claims about baseball.

Baseball TV viewership is not down. Not in any way. TV deals such as this one, which is FIVE TIMES the size of the previous deal, do not happen during an era when viewership is in decline.

Baseball's TV viewership is best monitored on a local/regional basis. The NFL gets to throw a marquee game up on Sunday night every week and measure their audience. Baseball measures their audience by how many local and regional fans are watching daily.

And the numbers are large and growing. Just read the Forbes article below; this past Playoff season, regional baseball broadcasts were easily beating national broadcasts of NBA and NHL Playoffs.

The MLB doesn't really care how many people are watching national broadcasts of NY/BOS. What they care about is how many people are watching regional coverage consistently in each market.

There are just too many different articles that can show the TV numbers for baseball are on the decline. For a "facts" guy, you definitely like to ignore them.

As for the contract, Im sure that each of the teams are doing great on the regional level. Thats great for them. Obviously they are still getting good numbers, otherwise they couldnt pull off such a great contract like that.

Yea, they'll cash in nicely once their current deal runs out next year. The ratings continue to go up on TV as fewer people go to games. Hell, even the radio ratings are up 27% this season - and this team is damn near unwatchable most nights of late

Wow, so you make a blanket statement then support it with one single data point? Brilliant*

Yes, World Series viewership is down from the peaks of the 80's. Just like NBA viewership has plunged since the 80's on a much broader base. Link shows that the NBA used to pull a 5 back in the 90s, now they're lucky to average a 2.2 during the regular season.

It's for a multitude of reasons: the World Series is at least 4 games, sometimes 7. If there's not a "large market" team involved then there's a lot of fans from those areas not watching potentially. You could just get a stinker series that involves a sweep. And, mainly, there is now SO MUCH other shit to watch on TV that you just didn't have in the 80's.

Super Bowl ratings are on the rise because 1.) It's one single event/game and 2.) It's been turned into a circus rather than a game, where most people are "watching" simply because they're at a party and want to see what stupid commercial is run.

The WS ratings still don't do anything to prove that MLB ratings on a broad base are on the way down. Regional tv viewership is as strong as ever and growing. Hell the Rays draw GREAT ratings in the Tampa region despite not having good attendance. There's nearly a game every day in the baseball season; therefore it doesn't matter if people in Seattle are watching ATL games. What matters is if ATL regional fans are watching.

If you think baseball is on the decline, go check out some of the HS tournaments going on every week. 80-100 teams from around the country playing all summer and the talent is better than ever

Rays avg attendance: 15,200

OCSC avg attendance: 33,400

Baseball is becoming more and more popular by the day.

Facts are facts.

Yes, a game we 'Muricans have given the world.

Why are you so anti-American? I'm sure we could ship you and your trailer to your third-world spot of choice.

Baseball is just a tool the racist white MLB owners use to keep Hispanics down. It's modern day slavery.

I used to be a braves fan. When they had the strike that killed world series, I said I was done. Have not watched a game since then. Couldn't even name a single player on a Fla team. Good for cards they got the $$$, hope they do well, I follow Baseball so much, I am not even sure where the cards play now. Arizona maybe?

combination, I decided they cared less about the fans, so why should I waste time on them. And to be honest with the long lay off, lost interest. I have really cut down on sports I follow as I get older. Don't watch nascar anymore, Don't follow NFL. only pay attention to NBA on the edges. My one and only passion now is college Football.
