Braeden Marshall, one of the 'Hometown Heroes' of UCF's freshman class, could be in line to make an early impact. The former Lake Mary defensive back has been competing at the "star" position (nickel) and has been singled out by coaches and teammates for turning heads during camp.
UCFSports.com caught up with Marshall at the recent freshman media day.
Marshall said enrolling early was a huge benefit.
"It's been great," Marshall said. "Coming in early helped a lot. Just getting used to the speed of the game. I'm blessed to be here. Hopefully I'll have an impact on the team this year."
He confirmed he's been playing the star position. DeJordan Mask (Texas State transfer) has also been at the same spot.
The biggest adjustment has been the difference in speed from high school to college which he said is "way different." You have to be in much better shape.
Why was UCF the right decision for him? Why did he want to be a Hometown Hero?
"Being close to home and having my mom and dad and my family able to come to the games whenever they want to," Marshall said. "The Big 12 too. Being able to stay home and play in a Power Five conference is a blessing. Nikai (Martinez) started it, then our class. We started a trend. We're showing these recruits UCF is the place to be. We are the future. Coach Malzahn is doing a great job. He knows what he's doing."
Marshall's goal this year is to make a positive impact on the team. He added that he's "super excited" to play in the Big 12 this season and is especially looking forward to the league opener at Kansas State.
