As of August 4th, after 48 years, the UCF newspaper Central Florida Future will cease publication and all employees will be transferred to Florida Today. A long tradition of a student run newspaper is sadly coming to an end. While its been dying a slow death for quite some time (going from 3 to 2 to 1 issue a week)

Sorry to hear that there will no longer be a campus paper. I started my career in journalism as a sports writer with the FuTUre in 1974, becoming sports editor my senior year. So many great memories of covering Intramural League showdowns, Torchy Clark's Knights and the Winston DuBose-led men's soccer team.

It's been a rough year for this veteran journalist. First the Tampa Tribune, where I worked from 1980-90, is bought by our rival St. Pete Times (sorry, can't embrace Tampa Bay Times) this spring, and now the Future is shutting down the presses after 48 years.

Bummer. I read recently that Gannett (Florida Today/USA Today) was trying to buy out the parent company of the Orlando Sentinel. News media is changing.

Ahhh I remember reading it. When I lived in Osceola Hall, I remember getting an edition in front of Pizza Hut and seeing a headline in the athletics section that read, "Lose to Cocks, Hard to Swallow".

I sent it in to Leno, but never heard if it got mentioned.

Sad to see it go.

A number of years ago, the paper was outsourced anyway, at which point the paper lost its soul and students their campus identity. Modern colleges today are totally preoccupied with controlling their PR, and it only takes one "irresponsible" or naive remark for it to migrate to social media and then a MSM scandal. Cable descends on campus and before long, administrative heads start rolling either for trying to control the story or for failing to. The Sentinel alone has put UCF into a bad light all too often -- expose pieces that take important people down wins journalism prizes, a ticket out of Orlando and off to a big-time job.

It's called the Future, but it's print media.
