Charlie Strong to USF

USF is fighting with Taggart. Taggart wants him for Oregon DC. I guess it boils down to if Strong wants to be HC at a G5 or DC at a P5 with chance to win a championship.

What a fall from grace. P5 Louis, P5 Loser to a loser G5. I mean it's not even a mediocre or crap P5 team.

He would take the HC job over DC

HC in Florida where all your recruiting connections are... its a no brainer.

Texas buy out clause states they will pay for half the salary for the next 2 years. So if USF offers him 2 mil. They only need to pay 1 mil the first year. It's a pretty big steal on USF's side.

Sure if he just sat at home, he's make 5 mil. But being out of the game for 2 years is pretty much a death sentence. Lose your routine. Lose your recruiting contacts.

That's not at all how his buyout works. His buy out is 5 mil a year for the next two years. If he takes a new job he has to give back half of what he makes @ the new job. So if USF pays him 2 mill a year, he has to give 1 mill back to Texas. So he would still be making 6 mil a year total.

USF pays the same either way. Texas takes half of what USF would pay him and deduct it from his 5 mil buyout.

I've got to laugh when I see some of these comments about how many millions a coach thinks he deserves to be a head coach. What a privilege it is to coach the game you love with outstanding young men and good people around you trying to help you succeed.

Are modern college coaches in pursuit of winning setting a good example of living for the love of the game or the love of money or just about how to be a prideful SOB? And we wonder why some of the players are turning out to be mirrors of all this...

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. As big a come down as when GOL left GaTech for Notre Dame only to wind up at UCF. Strong was the savior welcomed by Texas. Strong recruited all this superb talent but couldn't deliver on the field. His replacement arrives so rich in 4 and 5 stars, he'll be able to win in his sleep.

USF can't lose Charlie Strong to Temple, Cincinnati

You don't lose Strong to Temple or Cincinnati.

Do that and you're USF all over again.

Yeah, like they'd be something better than current USF with Strong. Willie put an exciting 10-win team on the field full of high-flying offense and they struggled to turn out 20,000 fans and generated zero buzz in the TB community. No one cares if they hire Charlie Strong or Charlie Chaplin.

Louisville was showboating the first 3 quarters. Then 3-yds-and-a-cloud-of-dust O'Leary was so far behind, he had to unshackle Bortles. That was all she wrote as Blake and his stable of receivers went into their hurry-up offense, and that's all she wrote. It was like when the man in black say's, "There's something you don't know" to Inigo in Princess Bride. "I am not left handed either."

he already has the money. texas is paying him 10 million
but doesn't he lose most of that if he agrees to coach USF?

lurked over to the Cows board and there are a few arguing that Tampa is a better place to live than Austin, they need to travel more.

I'll just post this again:

damn that's a good deal for him, still surprised that he's not taking a year off.

As of today Charile strong is a better recruiter in Florida than Taggart or Frost. He has stronger recruiting ties than we do in South Florida.

I'll be glad though if he takes the USF job. The truth is UCF will be stronger for it. If top athletes see Strong as a good option they will consider UCF and good UCF recruits will consider USF. Better for both programs. American will be better league if UCF/USF are very good consistent winners.

Other good thing is there is already instant hate for Strong in UCF land. We haven't forgotten how he tried to put UCF down at the Ville like we didn't belong on the same field with his team making excuses for why they lost to us.

This rivalry will pick right up with the dislike from Taggarts last second touchdown score against us a few weeks ago. I love it.

Good. They'll be mediocre with him at the helm. Everyone on here who thinks he is some ace recruiter might be half right, but they also may be half wrong. He recruited while at UF....during their heyday. It would be like working as a coach on Saban's staff right now and saying you're an ace recruiter. The talent is going to show up at those places whether there is a person or a piece of rock doing the recruiting. People want to rip on GOL and say he was only successful because of Taffe or Blake. Well, Strong is the same case. He had Bridgewater at Louisville that made him look good. At Texas he never had a QB and he sucked so is he a great coach and/or recruiter.....the zenmaster says, "We'll see."
In any case, we don't like him and this should amp up the rivalry another notch.

to go with that a lot of coaches get the same deal and back load the contract of the next job. so using the 2 million thing again if he signed a 4 year 8 million dollar contract he could take 500,000 for the first 2 years and when the texas money runs out and get 2 years for 7 millon from usf

So right. Talk about living in a bubble. Austin is one of the top places to live in the nation. Tampa? Only if you're elderly.
I'm not a USF fan, but you do sound like you haven't visited Tampa in 20 years. Every metro area in Florida is now inviting for the young and old. Diverse avenues for professional pursuit and enjoyment exist throughout this state of sunshine and opportunity.

Orlando sure has made that jump over the past 20 years. A vibrant youth capital. But certainly not ranked with Austin, Portland, Seattle, D.C., Frisco, Minneapolis, Miami, Brooklyn, or Seattle (and never can be).
Tampa is wealthier and with higher wages, for sure, vs. Orlando. Mid-ranked in overall quality of life.
Have you been to one of those places. Amazing transformation (especially in D.C., now not only by far the highest income and educated area in the nation, but with 5 separate fabulous 20- and early 30-something youth districts I've sampled).

Not to mention the number of great breweries, bars, and restaurants. I lived in Tampa/st Pete for 7 years. There's a lot to do if you want to do stuff. Or you can sit at home and say there is nothing to do.

Press...who doesn't have anything invested in these decisions...generally end up "loving" virtually every hire...even though less than 50% ever work out.
But the writing is on the wall for this year's hires: Texas works out, Oregon's doesn't, Baylor does but won't help their PR.
Also, those hires that do work become permanent fixes, while the failures can be booted out quickly. So even if the success rate is 30%, it's still well worth it in the long run to find a good coach.

I wasn't impressed with Stong's game plan when he was at Loserville. This will be interesting to see how he dose at USF. The good news they gave Taggert a few years to start winning. QB Flowers was the key for Willie to get the bus out of reverse. We know Strong can recruit Florida, maybe he will bring his recruiting buddy back Clint Hurtt. :sunglasses:
