We will dominate in fb and they will in BB. Don't see anything to build a rivalry on.

Ridiculous. The only remote aspect of relevancy was George's New Yorkese version of "Hell no, we ain't forgittin' " ( UCONN loss) this off-season.

Ughh, I was hoping Diaco was joking or would at least wait a few years before doing something like this. To put this in some kind of perspective, it is a shorter drive to Baylor from UCF than it is to UCONN.

We lose one freaking game because some of our guys were wussies in the cold rain and all of a sudden we have a rivalry? Let's give them a smackdown this year at home like the 62-17 game 2 years ago and put this "rivalry" to rest. Trying to make a rivalry where there's none.

UCONN is saying this is a kind of "internal trophy." So, who gets it when they lose this year?

The timing of this "Civil Conflict" announcement is interesting. Could this have any connection with the Big 12 expansion rumors? Using a rivalry, whether real or imagined, to help sell your school to a Power Five conference (and draw more attention to the UCF-UConn game itself) might not be a bad idea. Gotta grab people's attention somehow. Sometimes, you have to do something outside the box to get what you want.

USF regularly had problems with them in the cold. I was always concerned about any game we play at UConn, going into the conference.

I really wish this was true nowadays, but it isn't. The last conference shuffle ended ancient rivalries, over 80 years, and only the sports writers and fans cared. Rivalries are nearly meaningless. Cincy- Louisvile's Keg of Nails ended after 53 games and the ACC didn't give a crap about bringing Cincy in with Louis. It's now dead with no signs it will be played again. UConn-UCF 2 year "rivalry" is nothing, UCF-USF also means nothing to the Big 12. If they want Florida, they'll pick one of us, no need for 2, especially if they are thinking of marketing their Tier 3 games. 1 Florida team gives them that market.

I don't entirely agree with this. Yes, in some cases, expansion has ended (or, at least, put into storage for a later time) rivalries, there's no doubt about it. However, Miami (FL) and Virginia Tech are in the ACC right now partly because of the presence of Florida State and Virginia in that conference (yes, I know Virginia was opposed to having Virginia Tech join at one point, but obviously it didn't matter). TCU is renewing rivalries with some former SWC rivals in the Big 12. So expansion isn't always a rivalry killer. Rivalries still have importance to some degree, even though there have been situations when they have been overridden by the potential for greater profit.

Perhaps UConn feels that rivalries are still very important to most fans, and so they are attempting to generate one as a selling point. Will it work? I'm not certain, but I give them some credit for at least coming up with a creative way to sell a game with a fellow conference member. We're sitting here talking about it, so I'd say it's working to some extent. Maybe UConn and UCF already have been given assurances of Big 12 membership and this "Civil Conflict" concept is something that, in the long term, the Huskies' leadership hopes will make them look like a more attractive addition. It's a theory; I'm probably wrong, but we'll see. :)

Diaco is correct that he doesn't need UCF's permission or reciprocation to consider this a rivalry game for the Huskies. However, surely UCONN needs permission to use UCF trademarks on the trophy and any kind of marketing that they will push out on this.

Something else I find weaksauce from his presser is his explanation for not including the 2013 game on the trophy: that that was before he and his coaching staff got to UCONN. So you beat the eventual Conference co-champion for your only D1 win of the year and we're now rivals? That's not how this kind of thing works. A 45 point embarassment to a first-year BCS team? That's more likely. Besides, true rivalries transcend (and survive past) coaches.

Win this year, take the trophy and carve the 2013 results onto the dumb thing, that'll get them pissed if they ever get it back.

We should follow UConn's "creative" lead.

I mean ...

Civil Conflict Trophy (UConn v. UCF):
1-0 (really 1-1)

So ... flip it ...

War on I-4 Trophy (UCF v. USF):
2-0 (really 2-4)

Just Shy of I-75 Trophy (UCF v. UGA):
1-0 (really 1-1)

Seminole Speedbump** Trophy (UCF v. Bama):
1-0 (really ... oh wait, that's actual)

**FSU in between on I-10
