Anybody use those coffee machines where you put in the beans, it grinds them and then makes a cup of coffee? My wife is over the Keurig as it doesn't make the coffee strong enough and I don't drink coffee so I have no clue what is good or bad.

If you have or at least have looked at them, do you have any suggestions on good ones.

My mother-in-law had one and she would set the timer for 5am so her coffee was ready by 5:30. The grinder was so loud that it woke everyone in the house up. She eventually stopped using it because it was too much of a pain to clean and it would get jammed all the time. It's a lot easier just to get a good coffee grinder and a good coffee maker.

What you're describing is called a super automatic espresso machine. Jura makes the only ones worth getting, but they'll be more than $2k. You might be able to get refurbished one for a little less, but that's the ballpark.

Just get a decent grinder and a French press or a pour-over-drip cone. It's worth the (little) extra effort.

As you may know Keurigs & coffee grinders cost big $$$$$$$$ as such I use a drip & only on the weekends as I don't drink work's free coffee to save $$$$$$$$$$

These have actually come down in price pretty considerably since I last checked. The Jura ENA 9 is now a 4 year old model, but I saw it online, refurbed for $799. That's a tried and true reliable one. When you consider that new Kuerigs are about $250 and this will make much better coffee for a lot cheaper (no k-cups) the price doesn't seem too insane.

I love my Kuerig for the convenience of having a quick cup of coffee or tea but I pretty much hate the coffee that comes out of them. Expensive, weak, eck. I finally talked effer into bringing the drip machine back out and it is much better, even if it is a not-so-great drip machine.

We have a mr coffee grinder that works surprisingly well for how cheap it was. If you get a new coffee machine, get one with an insulated carafe vs the glass/heat plate.

Why make coffee at home when you can get a cup from Starbucks for $2.50?*

That is her exact sentiment. She said she can't get a strong cup of coffee out of the Keurig and she hated spending $20-30 a week on crappy coffee so she brought out this 4 cup drip machine. I was just going to surprise her with some all in one thing, but I am not dropping $700 on a coffee maker. Call me cheap, but that is ridiculous.

I agree on the $700 being ridiculous, but people value things differently. My friend at work thinks I'm crazy to pay someone to mow my yard, yet he has that model of coffee maker.

My coffee setup is a $100 grinder, $20 aeropress, and a $20 electric kettle. If you don't want to not put in the 5 minutes or so a day to make a great cup of coffee and instead want to press a button, that costs money.

I also have an aeropress. Awesome gizmo.

I have like 7 or 8 different ways to make coffee and use pretty much all of them. I just find it fun.... French press, aeropress, pour over drip, espresso machine, mako espresso pot, and a tassimo for convenience and guests.

Never done a mako espresso pot. Might need to pick one up just to try it out.
I just ordered a Hario cold brew yesterday so that will be my new experiment.

Gevallia Columbian, or dark roast, are the only acceptable Kurig cups I have found...and don't make the large cup.

The peets cups aren't bad. Had that in the office.

We have a machine in the office though that grinds fresh beans for every cup. You rent the machine from aramark and it's not even much more than renting office kuerigs. And price per cup is so much less since k cups are expensive as shit.

I can vouch for the Hario cold brewer. I love that thing. While it works with some pre-ground coffee, it's best to to grind your own coursely so that it doesn't get through the filter.

I've had it for a few days now. I'm impressed with how fine the filter mesh is. If you didn't know any better you'd think it was a solid plastic liner. I was surprised by the amount of soot at the bottom of the carafe. I don't think grinding courser would help this, as my grinder would still likely produce some of this dust. I'll try cleaning the burrs.

So far I've tried 12 hours refrigerated (a little weak) and 12 hours room temp (bland). Today I'm trying 24 hours refrigerated. What's your method?

If i get a cold brewer I am getting a drip one that creates a concentrate. That seems to be the way to go.

This one creates a concentrate, I guess what I meant by "weak" was under extracted. The shared flavor that all coffee has was there in full force, the bit that makes one coffee taste different from another seemed to be toned down. I'm hoping the extra time will fix that. Overall though, I'm very happy. Had both cold, without any sweeteners, where as I usually use sugar or equal to tone down the bitterness with other brewing methods.

I would recommend, if you get one, to get one with a paper filter (like the new OXO).

Cold coffee? What's the matter with you people? Cold coffee is very douchey...something Weeble Wobble would drink.

You shouldn't use KCups at all you ignorant jerk. They are BAD for the environment.

I've noticed that with finer the ground the more spot I get that will settle after a while.

I typically let it brew in the fridge for 24 hours. Sometimes 36 hours and then water down a little more. But I think somewhere between 12-24 has been the sweet.

I'm still fairly new to this, so I've been trying different coffee brands. kuai coffee and Godiva has so far been my faves. Dunkin and Starbucks were not very good.

I'm interested in trying the aeropress. I'm not a big hot brew fan, so when I learned about cold brewing I got hooked.

A few weeks ago, we needed a new kuerig, we ended up getting one of these refurbished Saeco superautos instead.
It works well and it goes without saying it makes immeasurablely better coffee than a kuerig (which makes coffee colored hot water).

It's $300 right now, plus I think you can get another 10%-20% with codes. I picked up the 2 year squaretrade warranty too. I figure even if it breaks in 2 years and 1 day I'll break even with savings from kcups.
