Currently using an aeropress, lots of good recipes out there. My preferred bean is Lavazza whole gran crema, dark but not too oily.

Papua New Guinea beans, roasted to full city, ground to auto-drip. 2 oz. weight for 1.25 liters. Scalex filtered hard water, brewed at 201 degrees, cooled to 165. I also like Ethiopian yirgacheffe roasted to king midas and pressed, extracted under pressure at 180 degrees with about 1/8th inch of crema per shot.

I still gravitate towards 8 o'clock columbian for my everyday drinking coffee. Ipick up some "artisan" coffees every other week or so with our produce shipment from Misfits Produce and have really liked this bean from Triangle Roasters Tanzania. I use a Bonavita drip coffee maker that works pretty well for my needs.

Tanzania coffee sounds interesting

This is a world the fascinates be but one that I'm totally intimidated by. I'm scared to even go to a Starbucks bc I have no damn clue what to say.... so I get a smoothie lol.

Starbucks is ridiculously overcomplicated and waaaay over sugared.

I'm a coffee enthusiast, ask any questions you got.

Back when I used to own a coffeeshop, we had what were called "cuppings", where people would come in and sample different coffees and learn about different beans and roasts. I'll see if I still have a copy of a questionnaire that can help determine what your taste preference would be. The 2 questions I can remember off-hand are "how do you prefer your steak to be cooked", and "do you prefer fruits like apricots, peaches and plums or nuts like peanuts and cashews"? It was pretty funny how we could determine what someone's favorite coffee would be based off of the questions.

Starbucks is shit. They blend their Arabica beans with robusta beans so they can roast it dark enough to stay on a warehouse shelf for weeks without losing the caffeine. Its basically all French roasted crap ground so fine that there's no origin flavor left but people think its good because its trendy. The founder of the company that eventually left started Peets Coffee and they make a really good bean even for a home brewer. Intelligentsia out of Chicago and B&W out of Mimneapolis are pretty much the gold standard for coffee.

- Medium Rare to Medium
- Fruits was my first instinct but I love nuts lol

I guess I don't have any specific questions, just generally intrigued. For me coffee has always just been one of those things where I'd have a cup if it was there but never went out of my way. Now with WFH and having a Keurig it's become a bit more habitual but sill nothing like my GF or others I see who are fanatics.

High level I'm interested in understanding the differences in beans from around the world and what it is that makes them unique.

The steak thing is to determine how dark of a roast you would prefer. If you like a medium rare steak then you will probably prefer a lighter roasted bean. The fruit vs nut thing is to determine a bean origin.

White wine or red wine was another one I just remembered. Dark chocolate or milk chocolate is another.

Beans are affected by all kinds of factors, all the way down to what kinds of birds are pooping on the plants, lol. Soil acidity, rainfall amounts, elevation where they come from, etc. Its not exactly what I would call a science but its dang near one.

Just based on your first 2 answers, I'd say you would probably enjoy a medium roasted (full city) Costa Rican bean. Probably a Mexican Altura as well. If you like milk chocolate then Hawaiian Kona would be a good one as well, but most places do a Kona blend so its not the same thing.

Whatever is BOGO at Publix.

For someone who has been drinking craft beer for 20+ years, I could give a shit about coffee. 7-11 coffee works for me.
