Can someone please enlighten me as to what all of the Cristobal love is about? He recruited 2 known players at FIU in his tenure. Goes 27-47 in 6 seasons at FIU (not to mention in the Sunbelt). Got fired from the HC job from FIU. Goes back to being an offensive line coach for Alabama. Is a recruiter there (tough job there.... "Cristobal: Hey, wanna come to Alabama where we have a bagillion National Titles? Recruit: OK"). I just don't see where the love is coming from for him.

Don't do this... I've been sick and tired of hearing about him. Talk about nut huggers. I will admit he'd recruit better here than at FIU, but I have no idea how he runs a team. His best year (1) at FIU would have fans here bitching - 8-5 I think it was with a bowl loss. the only time he won a conference it was because no one else wanted to, 6-6. He's never even been a coordinator, he's an Oline and TE coach. What they love is he recruited a ton of Florida players for FIU. What they seem to not realize is those Florida players have put together maybe 1 winning season. HOW EXCITING.

Who's realistically better that's available, somewhat proven, respected and affordable?

I'm not sold on Cristobal either. I will accept him as a high ranking assistant under the new coach but thats it...and i doubt that happens either.

Not a chance. Bet he makes near a million or more. These SEC guys are expensive. Especially Alabama

I think it would be unwise to write him off so quickly. Cristobal is still young (45) and brings a ton of energy, something we are in dire need of, but also already has a wealth of experience including as a head coach. Opening up the recruiting pipeline to South FL would be huge. I don't pretend to know everything about these candidates, but I see a lot to like. Here's how someone broke him down as a candidate for the UM job:

He's spent the past three seasons working under Nick Saban and was named the National Recruiter of the Year this winter after helping the Tide reel in, among others, Calvin Ridley, Daron Payne and Minkah Fitzpatrick, three of the nation's top freshmen. No one is any more plugged into South Florida in college coaching than Cristobal, a Miami native and former standout O-lineman at UM. Cristobal has head coaching experience having spent six seasons transforming FIU from by far the worst program in Division I into one that went to two bowl games. He also has a good eye for coaching talent, having hired Scott Satterfield, Geoff Collins and Todd Orlando -- three of the more respected up-and-comers in the college game -- and played a key role in helping Greg Schiano flip Rutgers from laughing stock status.

Cristobal's teams were fast and physical. They beat eventual Co-BIG EAST Champion Louisville and then C-USA power UCF, two programs with much greater resources than FIU. At FIU, things went bad in a hurry in his final season but a lot of that stemmed from the dysfunctional administration. Some may knock that Cristobal doesn't have coordinator experience on his resume. Of course, neither did Jim Harbaugh, Urban Meyer or Art Briles, and things have worked out fine with those guys.

I'm intrigued by Geoff Collins but I'm curious as to his offensive philosophy.
Collins biggest influence is probably Dan Mullen who runs a spread run offense. As does McElwain. So that would be the offense I would assume he would bring. Also he'd probably bring Kirk back.

Everybody is available. It's all a matter of how much money we're willing to pay. And I'm sure Dr. Hitt will make this a very splashy hire. He has no choice.

Let UM have him. He only had one good year at FIU. Add to that no one still knows what happened behind the scenes at FIU that led to him being booted. Right now there is little reason to fret over a coach. They need an AD first, and that wont happen for another 5 to 7 weeks.

By applying this logic no matter who the next coach is there will always be testicle warmers.

I wasn't trying to be logical. Just making an observation that the sun just set on GOL nut huggers and there already seems to be a group of pro Cristobal fans, aka, Cristobal Scrotum Clingers.

Cristobal is at 515k but thats still more than what we can afford him as an assistant.

Maybe Cristobal is sending out feelers - you know Cristobal feelers.*

I like Cristobal. However, I want somebody that is a proven recruiter without necessarily having the backing of a major P5 label. Think David Kelly. Think anti-Lance.

I believe if we can hold out for one month, we should be able to introduce an impressive
candidate in December as next coach.

Best thing is not to get hung up on this early list including this guy. I too wish we could
get someone like David Kelly in here but know he would never be accepted back.

If youre considering Kelley as a coach make sure he surrounds himself with great coordinators because his days as Stanford coordinator 10 years ago wasnt pretty.

Im not on board with Cristobal but lets mention some positives. One conference title - we love those trophies here at UCF* and two bowl appearances with FIU. Post FIU, spent two years coaching under Saban - perhaps that will benefit him during his next head coaching gig.

Hmm through 6 seasons had the same amount of conference titles as GOL had through 6 seasons. Also had one bowl win in six seasons while GOL had zero in six seasons. Did this all with a quarter of the resources and in a much worse conference.

Also had one of the worst AD's in pete Garcia. (who actually doesnt call himself AD, he calls himself Executive Director of Sports and Entertainment) The same AD that hired isiah Thomas after he tanked the Knicks.

.
No need to worry, no one will be hired before new AD is in place, and that at the earliest will be late next month.

Cristobal should be a strong candidate if he's interested. If he does make 515k, then he is a candidate for sure.
There's not many "experts" who don't think he would be a good fit, so interview him. Guys get even better at coaching after working at bigger schools. Ok,, so he didn't bring FIU a top 25 ranking. Please.

What part of SUNBELT does not make sense to you? Saying a coach did good in the sunbelt is like saying UCF had a good basketball team when we were in the Atlantic Sun Conference and went to the Tourney. It's like saying a recruiter did well at Alabama.... oh... wait... speak of the devil. Crystobal went from being a Head Coach back to being an Offensive Line Coach, not even a coordinator. WHAT DOES THAT TELL YOU???

Mario Cristobal's single year APR while at FIU: (his scores generally went down when more of his recruits got into the program. NCAA minimum is suppose to be 930).

969
951
932
919
954
926

FIU's Graduation Success Rate never got above 50% while under Cristobal's 6 years at FIU.

Don't see Dr Hitt approving him as a serious candidate.

Tells me UM should hurry and sign him.

Bama fans seem to not care if he leaves for a HC job while Georgia & Florida fans are are really worried about Pruitt and Collins leaving.

Lance Thompson was a top recruiter at LSU, Alabama and now he is at Auburn.

Thompson has brought in #1 5-star position players thru his career (especially at Alabama) but he never came close to that at UCF.
