Curious what others thoughts are on all people already demanding that major cruise lines donate their money, ships, etc. to help out with the relief effort.

Do you think Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Disney etc. have an obligation to dish out millions of dollars for relief efforts? I understand them possibly being used as a vessel to transport goods/services to and from their home port of call to other islands nearby while docked as part of the relief efforts but curious what others think.

Given this logic, when farms across eastern Nebraska were flooded this summer, people SHOULD HAVE DEMANDED that major tractor manufacturers (John Deere, Massey Ferguson, Case IH, and New Holland) dish out millions of dollars for relief efforts.

I don’t understand this “demand” at all. They don’t “use” the Bahamas, they bring thousands of tourists to their shores annually which literally drives the entire Bahamian economy and builds wealth for people there. This is like saying that Marriott should be on the hook to rebuild Florida after damaging hurricanes since they make tons of money off tourism here.

Should they help? Yes sure. And they will. I just don’t like this idea that they’re on the hook since they “used” the Bahamas or whatever

Its the same mentality that demands we “tax the rich” or tax corporations whereas most of us would rather have the cash on hand to donate at will

I dont think they have an obligation, but good will is certainly something that can go along way and end up benefiting private business. I am not a cruise guy, but if I was I would probably look at booking with one that did something helpful for people before I did with one that didnt.

That’s a valid reason for them to choose to help. As is rebuilding a destination that they use to sell cruises. But they have no moral duty.

a friend of mine left last friday for a 3 day cruise over the weekend. they automatically changed it to a 5 day cruise for them and went over to mexico instead. they had a great time.

ill be going on a 3 day cruise later this month.

But, in a way you make a case for free enterprise and it's ability to do the right thing even when making a profit. In this case profit motive is also a moral motive too.

If Disney , say , were to have a Dorian benefit cruise where you bought premiere tickets specifically to help out the Bahamas, you know people would pony over extra money to do it. They could get some music acts and such book the cruise for premium money and then get their guests to donate more on the cruise. It's a win win. It's good for business and good for the people in need. Fund raising cruise as it were.

If they want to use the Bahamas as a destination, then they should get involved in the effort to rebuild.

1.) It would make the process faster.
2.) It shows Goodwill
3.) They will benefit financially having a port so close to Miami/Canaveral.
All great reasons. I’m somewhat surprised we haven’t seen a larger number of “big evil companies making money off taking advantage of the poor Bahamians has a moral responsibility to rebuild the island” responses.

It's ultimately the Bahamian government's problem but there is a tremendous opportunity for the private sector here.

So, what are the chances that US companies invest heavily in the rebuild and then our country gets harangued for our "imperialism."

How long before China attempts to get them into a payday loan situation and then takes over their ports and airfields ... if they haven’t already

Unfortunately, I’m sure this is a strong possibility.

So Carnival has to lift the load to rebuild the Bahamas but asking Apple to remotely criticize the communists running concentration camps where they build all of their products is simply too much to ask

Got it. Just keeping up on “corporate responsibility” and all

"Imperialism" implies that the gov't is going in, this is the private sector. Honestly, American business already dominates the world, so that ship has sailed.

No argument from me. I think they should be making iPhones in the Northern Triangle.
