The last possession in regulation and the last position in OT are the perfect example of why Donny Jones is a Terrible X&O's coach. Neither possession created a shot....coaching shows late in in games, and both opportunities shows he just can't coach. I give him next year to show he can win with HIS players and not ones that were coached by Kirk...if not we need to start fundraising the buy out Jones Fund!

Coached by Kirk? give me a list of big wins please in 17 years by Speraw. He couldn't ever beat UF or Miami.

Please stop the revisionist history with him.

While I agree wholeheartedly that DJ's x's & o's are maddening I do think we need to wait one or two more seasons to see what he can do with full scholly's. I can't recall one instance this season where we were able to create a good look on a play coming out of a timeout. It appears he may be built to be an assistant coach like he was at FL; recruit top talent but leave the gameday to the actual coach.

PS: Stop comparing him to Kirk. Kirk has the nostalgia factor but wasn't a "next level" coach. He had to go eventually and could never win the "big game."

Kirk never had half the resources that Donny has....and I'm not saying that it wasn't time to move on from Kirk, but Kirk could coach x's & o's....Donny has proved time and time again that he can't. Again, watch the last possession of overtime...out of a time out...garbage!

Didn't know that was a topic.

Most are happy that Kirk was able to get an Asst Coaching gig at his alma mater, especially after almost no schools offered him a head coaching spot.

NOTE: Iowa just laid an egg in BIG TEN Tourn by choking to 13th seed Penn State, who was just 4-14 in conf play this season.

My god guys, guess they don't teach reading comprehension anymore. OP's point was all of Donnie's huge wins were with Kirk's PLAYERS, he never said he had a better tenure or better wins.

It really is the truth. Other than Isaiah Sykes, none of Donnie's players progressed the way they should have.

The bottom is in in bball. Patience , and the grasshopper can snatch the pebble from the master's hand.

You can't get a good picture when we are only playing with 7-8 scholarship players. Temple had the same problem last year as a really bad short bench team and this season with a full roster they are likely NCAA bound. We only lose Kasey and gain a ton of talent plus get our 2 best players back with more experience. If Brandon can keep progressing, we will be set on guard play. Blair and Mcbride need to have good seasons and we are set with a quality team.

I agree about the x's and o's. I was watching the UConn game and they were running some version of motion and kept the ball moving creating shots. It was actually pretty predictable where the ball was going but it still created shots for them.

UCF does not run anything like that. Its like the players make stuff up..like ok, lets run a pick n roll and see what happens.

We are in a lot of games - unfortunately its hard to tell if its schollys, overall talent, or Jones holding us back..

Really? I though most teams want to run plays (out of a time out) where you have a player (with three defenders around them) trying to shoot a running jumper while fading off to the left or right (as opposed to a step-back/fall-away or towards the basket). Are you trying to say that is not a high percentage shot?

I agree MArvelous, it is hard to tell.

You can't tell whether or not the players are following Donnie's coaching orders or not.....either way is not good though.

We'll just have to wait and see. Donnie's not going anywhere so we can only wait.

I personally think that there are real basics of coaching missing, as I have said before.

-Free throw shooting is horrible
-We don't box out correctly
-We don't look like we know what to do sometimes
-When we do get a possession, we throw it away so many times on silly moves
-Why on earth do we wait SO many times till the shot clock has expired till we are forced to shoot????????
-What is going on with mcBride...either play him and force the reps, make him lose weight with a nutritionalist and trainers, or let him go.
-We never shoot jump shots inside the perimeter. It's like a lost art or something. Teams that can hit 10 footer can win.
-We never ever follow our shots

JMHO

I think right now it's hard to pinpoint what the problem is with our team. Is it coaching, the players/youth, or limited players.

- Donnie outperformed Kirk with Kirk's recruits so I am not going to say that Kirk is a better coach
- I think it's super easy to be critical when we lose, so it's easy to blame Donnie right now
- we are short handed with our team/bench and I think that leads to fatigue during the game and especially at the end (when many criticize the X's and O's)

Fatigue effects these categories and I attached our conference rank
- rebounds 10th in conference. you get to less balls and don't jump as high when tired
- blocks 7th
- steals 10th
- steals/TO 11th (last)
- assist 5th
- assist/ turnover 7th
- TO's 5th
- 3PT% 4th
- 2PT% T-4th
- Adj FG% 4th
- FT% 10th
- PPG- 3rd
- OPPG- 11th (last) opponents points per game

I actually believe we struggle more on defense than we do on offense (with X's and O's).
- offense produces 100.7 points per 100 possession (ranks 218, but is above the 100 average)
- our defense allows 109.5 pts per 100 possessions (this ranks 18th [worst] in the ENTIRE country)

So maybe stop bashing the coaching/ X's and O's and look at the defense. When a player is tired, the first thing that goes is their defense. Next they get lazy with passing and shooting. But first is the defense!

i hate how every time someone posts about DJ's coaching decisions...it immediately goes to some macro level "debate" over scholarships or Kirk's players.

How about we just stick to "why does this team always look like shit and panic coming out of a critical timeout?"
