There was some outrage when some readers felt I didn't come down hard enough on George O'Leary after his retirement on Sunday. One reminded me of O'Leary's alleged mistreatment of former Georgia Tech offensive lineman Dustin Vaitekunas, whose mother considered filing charges at the time.
In 2008, UCF running back Brandon Davis collapsed during a workout and was hospitalized. The incident occurred nine months following the death of UCF's Ereck Plancher, who collapsed during an offseason drill. The university's athletic association was eventually found negligent.
Following those incidents, in August 2013, O'Leary said players had become "softer" due to "babying." Texted Jay Hoffman, chair of the UCF Department of Educational and Human Sciences (a frequent O'Leary critic): "He either quit or was fired. This is typical of a man with limited character attributes."
