Depth Chart Released

You beat me by a few seconds posting this!

No real surprises on the depth chart. Pretty much what I think most of us expected.

My questions (please comment):
1. What happened to C.J. Jones at RB, who had 7 starts last season? He's our most powerful back and showed some promise despite the absence of holes to run through.
2. I'm a bit perplexed about first-team punt returner. I know you want sure hands, maturity, and ability to cover on a fake punt. But then why not select a 1st or 2nd team defensive back?
3. Wondering why Akins placed as equal with with Franks and Bloom. Is the long recovery from Akins' type injury making him questionable? Or is it just their way of saying that sometimes they'll have two of them on the field?
4. After all the talk about true freshmen playing, there's "only" two who are listed as co-first team, and 3 as second team (counting co-listings as 1/2). Or is this primarily due to opening the season -- don't to put too much pressure on, let them prove themselves the first few weeks.

1. Not sure, but we don't get much info on injuries and he could be one of them. Also D'erren Wilson, a kid who played a bit as a true freshman at WR and showed he can catch a few TDs at this level @Tulane isn't listed either. Could be two guys who picked up a knock or didn't progress in the offseason under Frost.

2. I agree. Maybe I missed something about Johnson, but I'd rather see Tristan Payton back there - someone more explosive. Perhaps Johnson and Oldham were just more reliable and didn't turn it over in practices.

3. It is interesting because Akins was our most explosive offensive threat to begin last year. I hope it's more that the TE in this offense will require all 3 to see a lot of action through rotation. Bloom probably more of a blocking TE to come in for short yardage situations while Franks and/or Akins deploy in passing downs.

4. Still early. My guess is that Hamilton/Killins/Bargnare will be get the rock quite a bit by design to utilize their speed in this offense, so they will have a chance to make an impact and a name for themselves early. Tough for Snelson to break through with all the talent at WR, but at least he's listed and maybe gets a shot as the season progresses. Pretty impressive for Trysten Hill to step right into the D-line and start. I think it's set up for quite a few of Frost's first class to have an impact.

Kind of disappointing none of the JuCo guys we brought in to shore up the D-line that made it into camp seem to have made an impression (again, maybe they are nicked up and we don't know.)

Offense Starters

4 Seniors
3 Juniors
4 Sophmores

Defensive Starters

6 Srs
3 Jrs.
1 Freshman

And one Gr. Whatever that is, Probably a misprint for Jr.
That's "Graduate student" I believe. Not sure which masters programs Mutch is enrolled in. I've had an RB and a C in my grad classes in recent years.

I don't think any of them actually made it to the campus.
Lots of surprises. Where is stud offensive lineman Aaron Dowdell and Junior college transfer Christian Beard? The offensive line hasn't changed a bit. Rae has been blown
up the last 2 years in multiple occasions.

We have 2 linebackers under 220lbs and Drico Johnson is still playing safety. He was terrible last year.

Also, we have a true freshman on the defensive line in Hill.

Not thrilled with Johnson as the punt
returner either

Johnson is a DB with speed; good combo for punt returner, remember Joe Burnett.

The thing about a 3-4 is you need good size on your D-line. Not sure how this is going
to work out but expect some DEs to shift to DL when subs come in.

Chester Brown misses out on starting position again. 5th year now... Remember the large
tackle we had that never panned out, he was a giant. Name?

Wasn't Johnson the same guy that got run down vs. Tulane?

I think Chester Brown IS the large tackle that never panned out. That's the guy

.

He's slow compared to Jawon Hamilton and doesn't have the the natural talent to make defenders miss like Jawon has the potential to

after watching last season's RBs I called Hamilton starting as a True Freshman(see my rb depth chart thread from a week or 2 ago) the moment he committed to UCF

That's who I'm thinking of too, but that's a fairly common name. They moved him from WR to DB this offseason. He looked like a possession receiver type to me. He was a walk-on, I believe. That doesn't mean he can't be quick and fast, I just never saw it on the field last year. Could be wrong.

Fast forward to the 37 second mark (if you like to cut yourself):

Thanks for the video. Ugh.., you just ruined my whole morning. I'm not sure if it's the same guy either, but those 2 DBs from Tulane were clearly faster than him. Honestly, Tulane looked so much more athletic than us. I'm hope things change drastically this year.

Is the center from two classes back not playing anymore? I think his name was Luke Hiers. I know he hurt his back, is he done?

On July 5th he tweeted that he was still with the team

He's currently not on the active roster.
Add him to the long list of players that mysteriously disappeared. Only those closest to the program/players/coaches know.

It's a shame as he was ranked as one of the top center in the country in H.S.

He's been "Bermuda triangled"

Yeah, his twitter still says he's going to UCF. I think he had surgery before last season. Maybe a long recovery process? Who knows, but I thought he was going to be a beast in the middle of our O-line.
