Over the past few years, I have been trying to get the kids to all of the bucket list places in the US before we start taking them outside of the US. Other than the obvious ones that I list below, where are some of those must see places in the US.

The obvious list
  • New York City (times square, statue of liberty, etc.)
  • Washington DC (mall, museums, capitol, etc.)
  • Philly (Liberty Bell, Constitution Hall, place where they threw batteries at Santa, etc.)
  • Boston
  • Niagara
  • Grand Canyon
  • New Orleans
  • Chicago
  • Vegas Strip
  • LA
  • San Fran
  • Mt. Rushmore
  • Yosemite

You missed one that you'd enjoy. Technically not domestic but it is a US territory. I have been to all the places I want to go and it covers virtually everything on your list.

That's a pretty thorough list! Another good city is Charleston, SC. Lot's to see, do and eat (yum, southern food!). The Biltmore and Asheville make a nice trip too.

Finally, I wouldn't forget local history/nature outings interspersed with the bigger trips. Florida beautiful springs, beaches, and historic sites that all residents should see.

I agree with most of your list, some Ive been lucky to visit already. Here is mine in no particular order:
  • New York City
  • Washington DC (I went as a small child but dont remember much of it)
  • Philly (Liberty Bell, Constitution Hall)
  • Niagara Falls
  • New Orleans (check out Mardi Gras)
  • Alaska
  • San Francisco / Napa Valley
  • Yosemite
  • Yellowstone

Asheville and the Biltmore are great!

Savannah, GA and Charleston, SC are good, but the number one (imo) should be a snorkeling or diving trip in the Florida Keys.

I edited your original list
Ahh, I didn't see that.

We just came back from the kids first snorkeling trip in the Keys this past weekend. They are already begging to go back.

I hadn't thought of the Arizona, probably good when they are a little older though.

I type this as I sit in Alaska. If you don't have this on your list you are lacking. First of all, it's 60 degrees in June. That doesn't suck. Every view has a snow covered mountain in it. Absolutely gorgeous.

I've been to three places that I call "God's country"- Glacier National Park, Alaska and the Canadian Rockies/Banff. Give me these places over a beach any day.

Alaska is one of the few places I'd love to go. In addition to being absolutely beautiful, the fishing is phenomenal.

Do yourself a favor and get out of the cities and beaches and head to Montana/Idaho/Wyoming. It's the most incredible landscape that the US has to offer, has more open space than most all of the US combined, and offers some of the best nature tourism in the world (IMO).

We took a seaplane and then went hiking to a lake in Montana set against a mountain when I was there and the nearest human was like 70 miles away. It was mind blowing.

Crossing the border up into Alberta and the Canadian Rockies is awesome too.

I want to do "The Loop" when I'm older. Boat trip up the Atlantic Coast through the great Lakes and down the Mississippi to the Gulf. You can hit most of the major spots on the east side of the country too.

**** that sounds awesome and expensive. Your boat isn't big enough and you don't take vacations.

He is saving his vacation days for just this trip. He is thinking long term.

And you forgot to factor the ball size to boat size mathematics. No boat is too small or waves too big if you have giant nuts.

Hell, head out in a jon boat with a 45 hp motor.

absolutely not

Maybe I'm a little jaded on it because I was there for a week and got island fever. I did not like the fact that I was stuck there with the only way to get off was either by plane or boat. I did enjoy surfing a lot.

That's why I said when I'm older. Need to have a 35-40' boat and about 6 months to a year to do it. It's a post retirement trip.

Have you ever been? I can only speak for Oahu but after being stuck on that island for 4 weeks it's not my favorite place to be. I don't know if I'd call it overrated but it isn't what most people expect it to be.

Waking up at 7am to watch football was pretty cool though.

Yeah, I can only speak for Kauai. It was beautiful but it's an island full of angry samoans.....whoopee.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. I want to spend like 3 months in the summer camping up there. Waking up every morning and going for a cold swim. Campfire every night.

$20-30,000 on top of normal everyday living expenses. The boat is obviously the super expensive part not included in that.

Yes and visited multiple islands - Big Island, Kauai, Maui, Kona - been there for them.

I think it belongs on this list not because its legit absolutely beautiful but also because of the mountains and volcanoes that go with "just" the beaches. Its definitely unique and something about being on a remote island for vacation is a great experience.

Three months is a bit much. I've been there and a week or two is about all you really need there. If you're going to go in that area for 3 months, I'd recommend Isle Royale and Mackinac to go along with Pictured Rocks. It is really gorgeous, though.

My list:

Grand Canyon
Hawaii
Olympia National Park
Glacier National Park
Bryce Canyon & Zion
Yosemite
Crater Lake
Yakima Valley Wine Country

Yeah don't take it off the list, it belongs there. It didn't live up to my expectations but that could be because I was working and wasn't able to travel to the other islands. Oahu is damn small and it doesn't take long to really see everything. It wasn't like I was staying in a shit place either, at the Marriott resort right on Waikiki beach. Honolulu is a city. Waikiki beach is full of bums their piss and shit. The other areas of Oahu are either really touristy, or trashy/ghetto, or the locals don't want you there.
