UCF defensive tackle Anthony Montalvo is back for one last ride.
The Tampa native has had quite the journey over the last five years, enrolling as a walk-on prior to the 2017 season, earning a scholarship and pushing his way into the starting lineup. We caught up him following Thursday's practice, their seventh of spring.
For his final spring, Montalvo said his main focus is perfecting his technique.
On the addition of Lee Hunter, a transfer from Auburn:
"First of all, he's huge. He's a big guy. He's young. Obviously he's inexperience but he has raw talent. Give him a couple years and he's going to be the guy here."
How is the interior line looking between Monty, Ricky Barber, Keenan Hester, Lee Hunter, etc.?
"We're looking like a great unit. Especially with Coach Martin as our coach. He's gonna get every guy right. He's very straightforward with you. He's going to tell you how it is. What you need to hear and not what you want to hear. I think with him as our coach and the players we have we can go a long way."
Monty talked about big guys like Ricky and Lee and how teams may have no other choice but to double team them.
Who's been a standout of spring?
"Kervins Choute and Matt (Alexander). They've improved a lot. Coaches are noticing and they're moving up on the depth chart."
Looking across the line at the OL, Monty usually goes against Lokahi Pauole and Adrian Medley.
How good can this defense be?
"We can be great. I think everybody can be All-Conference with the talent we have."
