Don't tell me that a 40, 42 or 47 yard field goal is "a chip shot" or "an extra point" for a freshman kicker in his first game with all the pressure. That is total BS.

We continue to pass on 1st down at the 23 yard line and we win that game and escape with a crappy win.

Now we are looking at 1-3 going into conference play. I'm totally bummed out going to Stanford and South Carolina now.

The coaching staff completely mismanaged the end of the game last night. First, decided to let the game ride on an unproven, inexperienced kicker. And then go into an offensive shell and attempt a couple of runs up the middle, which hadn't worked all night against FIUs line. Losing yards. And then a motion penalty on the first FG attempt, backing up another 5 yards. And then, the line not blocking on the second attempt allowing the block. GOL the AD should fire GOL the coach. And then GOL the AD should step down.

Holman was having a good night passing the ball. Stay with the experience and the hot hand. But I guess I'm just an armchair QB/coach and don't know anything about football.

That kick had no chance to be successful. None.

Yeah, I don't get it. Even with Moffitt (who was a shining star in a long bleak run of bad UCF kickers), he was only about 50% from 40+ yards.
GOL seriously thought, at 40 yards out, "I'm just going to center this up and bleed clock"
The dude had never kicked a FG in CFB game before... ever.

I agree 1000% Mike. What a piece of crap coached game last night. ZERO new plays. FIU new every play we would run.....run...run...pass....punt. What a great way to show the Big 12 that we have arrived...HAVE NOT ARRIVED. I am broiling mad! I mean Defense held them so so...but the lack of coaching and play calling lost this game. I think the old man has lost it.

I would have been okay had George said, at the end of the game, "I made that call. It was probably a bit to put on a young freshman. I thought it would give him confidence. Next time, with over a minute left, we'll get inside the 20."

But instead ... "25 yards out ... a PAT ... a chipshot."

Now I'm more afraid he's heading into senile years. Honestly, sincerely, not saying that as an insult. I'm one of the bigger GoL apologists arouind here too. But that one ... man, I hope he changes his tune. Otherwise, he needs to become AD-only or somewhere with a desk.

Because I won't trust him to manage a late game situation like that ever again, if he doesn't realize what he just did and then said about it! I know he's hard on kickers, has high expectations for them. But that one ... borderline incompetence if he doesn't stop back to realize it, at least after-the-fact.

It's easy to be arrogant when you have no fear of consequences. I would not be surprised if they fired Hitt and named O'Dreary the new Prez along with being AD and impersonating a head football coach.

I'd say the whole "if all you want is top 25, then I'm not interested" is the dumbest and most arrogant GOL statement ever.
Why? Because he delivered?

Seriously. While I'm totally concerned about the ending of this game, and his judgement as well as statements after the fact, GoL was honest when he came in about what he expected from UCF.

He wanted to build a top 10 program. He got the GPAs up and still tries to bring in the type of student-athletes we aren't going to be embarrassed by off-the-field. In that respect, I have no problem with him.

I can take a loss to FIU, hard to swallow, but I can take it. I can even deal with his conservatism. What I cannot explain and what I cannot understand is when it's more than conservatism ... but really head-scratching comments about 40+ yard field goals.

I don't know of any coach that would purposely not get inside the 20 for an easier kick with an unproven kicker, especially when his offense is driving well. I'm at a total loss about the PAT/chipshot ... unless he admits he forgot to add +17 yards.
