He's a bit overrated as a guitarist, but as a musician he is largely responsible for the music of the 80s. They had a sound that nobody was able to emulate but influenced almost everyone.
I just say he's a bit overrated because a lot of people just remember Eruption, which was pretty unique but in all honesty not that impressive. JMO, but once they bounced David Lee Roth from the band EVH really came into his own as a songwriter. 5150 and OU812 are really unique and still define music in the 80s for me. His keyboard work on Dreams was way underrated.
