Holmes heard from staffers that Messina made public comments that sounded "unprofessional, inappropriate, bitter, insubordinate," Holmes wrote in a Dec. 12 email.
In the emails, Holmes accused Messina of acting insubordinate and being critical of the foundation during a Dec. 11 quarterly meeting for foundation and alumni association employees. Messina voiced concern about alumni staff working long hours and complained about alumni not having a voice in the university's search for a new provost, the emails showed.
Holmes also accused Messina of singling him out.
"...While Bob would not want me to say this, but he is not here, so I will," Messina reportedly said at the time, according to Holmes' email. "Bob is not even f...king here."
Within days, Messina would lose his job.
"You have constantly made critical comments about decisions made within the foundation and the university. Making matters worse you have show a lack of discretion by sharing your opinions with Association leadership," Holmes wrote in the Dec. 12 email that was sent to Ben McMahan, the foundation's chief operating officer; Margaret Jarrell-Cole, the foundation's legal counsel; and JB Himmer, the foundation's resource planning director.
