FCC chairman reveals plan to kill net neutrality

What were the issues before 2015 when this was passed?
It was only overseen by one Federal Agency; apparently, the FCC thought it should be two.

And compare the ISPs to cellphone data usage, which has no NN protections. Has the price of data gone up or down? Down. Even companies that used to meter data and bill for overages are now paring back those rules and offer unlimited usage due to competition.

NN isn't the boogeyman some people make it out to be. It has stifled internet infrastructure investment and ISP competition.

itll be great when an isp that happens to be run by a liberal decides that he wants to slow access to any conservative website. but dont worry, all the liberal media websites will load instantly.

or the isp has a deal with amazon video, but you have netflix. thats cool netflix will buffer like crazy, but theyll just tell you to use amazon video instead. its all good...

I thought the big issue was in prioritization of speeds which would lead to large companies (i.e. Netflix) purchasing large chunks of bandwidth which would lead to access to the rest of the internet slowing down. By ISPs remaining under Title 2, they're classified as a utility and cannot create fast lanes.

That's not how it works. More and more, those companies were bypassing the internet backbone to get their own fast lane to ISPs (see the Wired article I linked above).

The Verge actually had a pretty good, unbiased article, instead of the 'hyperbole' that both sides like to flaunt.

"If Portugal is a net neutrality nightmare, we’re already living in it"

As a long-time, actual techie and critical of both left and right, I get tired of the hyperbole I get on this issue.

Net neutrality can work, and it can be ripe for lobbyist abuse where large providers squash both small ones and consumers. Lack of net neutrality can also work, and it can be ripe for large providers to squash both small ones and consumers.

I think the whole "Portugal" litmus test (that 'it's a nightmare') is being used by the pro-Net Neutrality in a light that really goes beyond what it is, and this article does a great job of showcasing how we already have most of what Portugal has without net neutrality any way.

The Fifth Column Podcast had Ajit Pai (FCC Chairman) discussing the recent Net Neutrality news. It's a good discussion and get to hear his reasoning directly.

Yep, the mainstream media demonizing and treating us like 8 year olds gets to me. I have issues with removing Net Neutrality, but I have many issues with Net Neutrality too.

I mean, I had to look away from 90% of the rural properties here in central Alabama because they didn't have anything ... but Satellite (only 50Gbps caps/overages!) Net Neutrality has done nothing for access.

I'm now on 14/3Mbps VSDL, and AT&T had to knock me down to $20/mo -- $10 off -- because they couldn't give me the 25/5Mbps I ordered, because I'm over 1 mile (1.4 miles) from the Exchange.

Despite having throughput that would make 4K a non-starter, ironically, I'm getting the most reliable uptime with 0 disconnects, and my ping times are under 20ms. This is also because I'm only a handful of subscribers to that exchange 1.4 miles away, that is on a public university trunk just 3 more miles away.

Net Neutrality, without details, can be anything.
