Final Top 25 Rankings

Well....lets be honest. If we were all in the same conference they might....might all be ranked but would have probably had at least 4 teams ranked. Most of those teams would have been playing each other and collecting "quality wins" or "quality losses". I get the sentiment but that is really not reality. Still, a great year for all those programs.

New Big 12 with 5 teams in the Top 25.

#4 Cincy
#5 Baylor
#7 Ok St.
#17 Houston
#19 BYU

Looking forward to us getting back into the rankings next year and every year going forward.
Louisville was a tough loss, I think if UCF won that game and ended with 10 wins they may have been ranked at the back of the pack.

We didn’t receive any votes either. I wonder if we would have beat Navy and had 10 wins if we would have been ranked? I think the eye candy of having a 10 in the W column would have done it.

I know…what if. But it is the off season.

I agree and Louisville definitely shined a spotlight on how important it will be for us to have quality depth. We will be playing a Louisville type or better opponent every week.

We were about a 50-60 ranked team according to the various computer systems.

Guys we actually have a transitive Championship this year.

UCF beat Memphis
Memphis beat Mississippi State
Mississippi State beat Texas A&M
Texas A&M beat Alabama
Alabama beat Georgia
Georgia won the championship

Charge on

You could have fun with this.
Navy beat UCF
Marshall beat Navy
MTSU beat Marshall
Old Dominion beat MTSU

I stopped there.

Both Louisville and Navy. To think this team could have been 11-2 or 10-3 (We would have had a very different opponent in our bowl game if we won those games). Honestly, that would have been the worst 11-2 or 10-3 team I can recall. I love the heart and grit this team has, and if we throw talent on top of that it should start to bloom but there wasn't a lot of talent out on the field on 2021 once injuries set in.

I've seen a couple 'way too early preseason' rankings with no mention of UCF.

#22 Florida Gators get a mention! No UCF? Really? We going to be worse next year than this?

UCF hasn't been in the rankings talk for 2 straight years at the end of the season. As a G5 team, you are not going to get propped up preseason after a couple years out of the limelight. 2021 strength of record is real weak, 2022 could finish with the same record, but odds are the wins will be better.

I know that's just a guess but I would be pretty pissed off if Miami and Florida are ranked going into August with Oklahoma State being left out. That would be ridiculous, but entirely plausible.

The only way to reduce UCFake news is to reduce the consumption of it. Top 25 polls are baseless clickbait.

What better opponent would want to play in Gasparilla Bowl? I think that was best case scenario if not NY6.

Finishing where we did and beating Florida in the Jose Gaspar Bowl has earned far more important dividends than if we were 11-2 and went to the Birmingham Bowl due to the in-state recruiting bump alone. Beating Florida alone will reap us more of a booty than if we beat Auburn.

Found one.

17. UCF
The buzz:
There were some growing pains with new coach Gus Malzahn this season. Those won’t be there in 2022, and RB Isaiah Bowser’s decision to return is big.

A lot of the articles I read now, especially the ones talking about the Big 12 bowl teams, talk about “future members” UCF and Houston beating Florida and Auburn from the SEC.
That looks good for our national recognition.

This is why I find polls so useless until like 7-8 weeks into a season. You just don't have a big enough sample size for teams yet.

Pretty typical when I start breaking down teams records:
***"Ranked Competition means teams you played are ranked in the final AP Poll....not week 1,2,3, etc...
1. Georgia was 4-1 against ranked competition.
2. Bama was 3-1 against ranked competition.
3. Michigan was 2-2 against ranked competition.
4. Cincy was 2-1 against ranked competition.
5. Baylor was 2-1 against ranked competition.
.
.
14. Clemson was 1-3 against ranked competition.
15. Wake Forest was 1-2 against ranked competition.
.
.
23. Iowa was 0-2 against ranked competition.
24. Utah State was 0-2 against ranked competition.
25. San Diego State was 1-1 against ranked competition.

That's right. After about ranking #15 it is pretty typical that those teams have a losing record against ranked competition.

Here's pretty much the formula to be ranked. I don't know why we need shows and talk radio to talk endlessly about this when this is all you need to know:
1) Beat all the chumps on your schedule, regardless of home or away. (***We lost to Navy who was a chump on our schedule)
2) Win your home games. (We did this. 7-0)
3) Be .500 or better on the road. (We were 1-4 on the road.)
4) Win your bowl game.

Even if you have a losing record against ***Ranked Competition, you'll probably get ranked. Do better than any of these criteria and the higher you will be ranked. As examples, in 2013 we were 2-1 against ranked competition (and that year it happened to be 2-1 against top-15 ranked opponents). In 2017 we were 4-0 against ranked competition.

I'm just glad we didn't go 5-7 after Dillon went down. Our final record confirmed that improving the defense and running game was a big step for our program. Malzahn always called a more exciting game than GOL when we played him back in the day in CUSA.
