First year coach grades

funny that fans that posted comments almost identical to their explanation were called delusional

fair grade. UCF should never be uncompetitive in AAC games

Gus will outrecruit Heupel here. But I think Heupels gimmicky scheme allows him to compete with a lesser level of talent like he did at UT this year. This year we got the combination of Heupel talent and Gus scheme and it was ineffective. Let’s hope Gus can come up with an effective offense without having to recruit at an Auburn level. Since that’s not happening at UCF.

I say Gus has a gimmick offense when his 3 runs don’t work he try’s some ineffective “trick” play. I don’t think Gus is a great offense minded coach.

Why wouldn’t more coaches use gimmicky schemes if they don’t have the best talent?
Lots of coaches use tempo to exploit the same things in opposing defense. It usually doesn’t result in reaching the pinnacle of the sport because top tier defenses can shut it down and it relies too much on lower percentage explosive plays rather than methodical drives. Think the Briles Baylor system. If you look at some of the Tennessee games this year against Bama and Georgia they jump out to a lead by catching the defense off guard with tempo. But a team with good a good secondary can eventually shut it down. If you don’t have a good secondary you can get run out of the building though.

So, we are going to judge him without seeing what one recruiting class can do? That doesn't seem fair. He was signed after the national signing day. I think if you go back and watch his career, there is some creativity there. I recall a 4th down play against Alabama a year or two ago that was pretty clever. As somebody who assigns grades frequently, I give him a NG (No Grade). He didn't get a chance to recruit a backup to DG, who the offense was going to be designed around. Then he was left with whatever the previous regime had acquired. Hard to win when you lose your top playmaker and you haven't had a chance to get your guy in. Very much looking forward to what TC brings to the table next year. As long as he is healthy, I think 8 wins is well within reach next year. Then we move to bigger competition with a QB with a years experience under his belt. The OL will be better. I just hope the WR catch better. Lot of drops this past season.

I don’t agree with the grade, but who cares. I feel these National pundits look at win-loss and not too much deeper into the inner workings of the team circumstances. I’d give Gus a way better grade just for the sheer fact he won 8 games with all the injuries we had of impact players. Takes a good coaching staff who can lead to do what they did and keep a team together like that.

We should give him some time. But also consider he brought in a QB and multiple WR and RB in the portal. Some that he previously recruited and coached. It’s not automatic that the “next round“ of his guys moves the needle considerably from what we saw. Part of the problem is the play of the O line. Tempo masked some of the size issues we have as a G5 school. They were exposed this year. He will have to recruit bigger linemen going into the B12 to run his offense successfully. Historically that type of player had been difficult for UCF to get.

As weak as our opponents were this year outside of Cincinnati and SMU, I don’t think 8 wins (even with all the injuries) is anything to write home about. We didn’t beat anyone we weren’t supposed to, and lost one (Navy) that we definitely shouldn’t have. The W-L record is pretty inflated this year, looks better than it really was.

*Of course, I don’t really believe any of that garbage. But many people have discredited Keene managing the team to this record, even though he’s a true freshmen who physically was never ready this year (and was never supposed to play, but showed up for us anyway) - claiming the record is inflated. Why should Gus, with all of his coaching experience, be afforded more leniency than a kid?

I’m good with the average grade, but I’m still hopeful moving forward once Gus gets a couple of his recruiting classes in place.

We were favored in 10 games and won 8 of them. We were underdogs in 2 and lost them both by considerably more than the spread.

The Cinci blowout gets a pass this season considering their talent and they were up for our game to make a point ..SMU shouldn’t, they are not that much more talented than UCF for that game to be over in 5 minutes

Cincy was up 35-0 before we made a first down or attempted a pass beyond 5 yards from the LoS. We played conservatively and got blown out anyway.

I still think the coaching staff did an amazing job with all the injuries and loss of impact players. We all saw the level of play, especially on offense and special teams, it was awful at qb, kicker and punter. Without the much improved defense, we are usf, in fact we lose to usf and many others. Without the injuries, we lose 1-2 games tops and possibly beat Cincy. You guys are vastly underplaying the injuries and what this coaching staff did to pull out wins, with an inept qb and no kicking game whatsoever.

Amazing? No. Passable, maybe. UCF was favored by a touchdown or more in 9 of 12 games and went 7-2 in those. And some of the games we were favored by double digits at home like ECU, Tulane, and usf we needed late defensive stands to hold these teams off. In the 2 games we were underdogs we we 2 and 3 touchdowns on the wrong side of the spread. Not even competitive.

Defense was the most reliable but everyone has a lot of work to do. Coaches too. Nobody is going to succeed without grinding.

T-mo’s two retread hires were either historically bad (butch Jones) or mediocre (Gus). I think that should be the story and be a red flag about his hiring abilities. At least when he shifts from his philosophy of hiring coordinators over retreads.

People are definitely overplaying the improvement of the defense. We played 4 competent offenses all year (Boise, Louisville, Cincy, SMU) and we gave up 46 points per game in those 4 games. Had one of the worst defensive performances I've ever seen in the Navy game.

When we join the Big 12, we'll be playing offenses the caliber of those 4 teams every week.

To further confirm this. Cincinnati highest scoring game was against UCF. SMU only scored higher against an FCS team, and Louisville only put up more points against Duke.

It works both ways. We also held Memphis and Tulane to their lowest scoring output of the season. Held the cows and ECU to their second lowest scoring outputs (Cows were shut out by NC State in the opener and ECU scored only 13 against #4 Cincinnati).

The Memphis game there is clear caveat that they were starting their 3rd string QB playing in his first (and to this point only) game and he was terrible.

If you want to toot our horn, about shutting down a couple of 2-10 AAC teams, go ahead I guess.

ECU is definitely the most impressive defensive performance of the season, but let's not act like they're some kind of offensive powerhouse.

The facts are what they are. The defense played well and won us 5 games and they also played poorly in other games.
