Anyone who still thinks vouchers, charter schools, and various other private offerings are a good idea needs to have their head removed from their ass. The Orlando Sentinel did a several month investigation of Florida charter schools, more than the state itself had inspected, and found millions of dollars being wasted on schools in strip malls, teachers without a college education, and a myriad of other wasteful and unethical practices.

...and Trump and DeVos want to model the entire country with Florida being the model.

There are several in-depth articles here, and I know none of you mental giants will read it, but you should learn about how awful Republican policies are. These places should be shut down.

My kid goes to a charter school that’s the second-ranked elementary school in the state. They have accreditedation from numerous national bodies and we couldn’t be happier.

There are a number of schools that don’t come close to meeting their standards and we would not send our kids there, opting instead for whatever public school offering we had. But this was a great opportunity we couldn’t pass up. The waiting list is ridiculous for his school and we were lucky to get in.

There are good charter schools, and then there are the "we'll take the rejects" charter schools that public schools send their "rejects" to.

In other words ...

When charter schools work like they're supposed to, they really do work. And the voucher system ensures many minorities can send their kids to good schools, instead of the crappy public schools in their area.

And when charter schools are "receivers" of all the "rejects" of what public schools don't want, because they're "gaming the system" to artificially increase their grades, it's the greatest abuse, with the victims being students.

Every system has loopholes.

Democrats like to look at the failing charter schools, not the schools sending them their rejects.

Republicans like to look at the outstanding charter schools, and ignore the avenue that fails the students.

Libertarians see the obvious ... competition is good, and schools that don't care about all students are going to fail many of them anyway, both government and private schools. The key is not to remove competition, and even question how much government should or shouldn't be involved. Such as government mandated unions that not only protect bad teachers, but bad administrations.

After all, for anyone who says charter schools cannot work because of "corporate greed" hasn't seen the OCPS administrative buildings. Imagine if those administrators had to work in schools, while students got to hold classes in OCPS buildings. ;)

Yes ... the government controlled public schools are doing a wonderful job ... no worries! Can't read? Get a special diploma and you still graduate high school!

This post was written by somebody that knows what they are talking about. The OP was written by somebody that waits for the Orlando Sentinel to tell them what to think.

BS pretty much nailed it. There are great charters and there are terrible ones. I think it was the OS that had an article last year about how public schools are pawning off the shitheads on the shit charters. I don’t mind that honestly because it gets those kids away from students that want to learn

This is the key. Use competition to raise the bar. But in order for it to operate properly, there needs to be oversight over the subsidies and a system by which funding can be pulled for inappropriate use of funds. Then funding goes to a different (or new) school that better uses the funding. The system can self-correct but that requires someone running it with half a brain, something rare in the bureaucracy.

And if you are going to do an analysis of charter schools, you should remove the ones that take the public school rejects before you start your analysis.

Just about ANY school that has these kids is going to look stupid ... no matter what.
