According to one of their latest tweets, FootballScoop lists potential candidates at UCF..

UCF: Per sources, new AD Danny White plans to interview both Geoff Collins and Randy Shannon from Jim McElwain’s staff at Florida. Separate sources believe that Dino Babers is expected to interview as well. We also have been told that Gene Chizik has been discussed as well. As more becomes clear we’ll keep you posted.

Some good names on that list. Hopefully we can afford them and/or available for UCF. 13 teams out there looking for head coaches!

Here's your David Kelly replacement in recruiting:

Although he left Miami with an unremarkable win-loss record by the program's previous standards, Shannon still left a significant legacy at the program. He guided the school to the third-best Academic Progress Rate in NCAA Division I FBS. In his four-year tenure at Miami, only a single player was arrested. Perhaps most significantly, he was apparently untainted by the scandal that engulfed the program in the 2011 season, as he avoided contact with Nevin Shapiro, the rogue booster who admitted to providing massive amounts of improper benefits to Miami players from 2002 to 2010. Sports Illustrated writer Alexander Wolff, in an August 2011 open letter to university president Donna Shalala, noted that Shannon "seems to have been the only person in Coral Gables who wanted nothing to do with Shapiro, reportedly warning his players to avoid him and threatening to fire assistants caught dealing with him."[18]

Though Shannon's teams went through some struggles on the field, he consistently brought in recruiting classes ranked in the top 25.[19][20][21] Three members of his second recruiting class—Marcus Forston, Marcus Robinson, and Sean Spence—were recognized by College Football News as freshman All-Americans.[22]

After the South Florida loss, the university announced its decision to terminate Shannon immediately.[23]

Note: They let him go after losing to USF, premature? If he's hired great for recruiting and great character. I wasn't impressed with his offenses and we would need a good OC to jazz this up.

Hiring a coach Miami fired after losing to USF doesn't seem like the best marketing strategy to increase season ticket sales

Randy Shannon? [sick]

He is Cristobal but without the experience of working under Saban
I personally think that Randy Shannon could do for UCF what Charlie Strong did for Louisville.

With Randy's access to high-level recruits in Miami we could quickly turn it around and be a consistent title contender in the American every year. Randy was a big time Defensive Cordinator in college football for a lot of years before he got the head coaching job at Miami. The recruits in Miami trust Randy.

If his name is in the mix I might be starting to lean Randy's way.

I think being able to bring in top level recruits has to be the number one priority in the next coach we bring into UCF.

He lost to USF with Miami's recruiting advantages in the ACC

It's a bad sign when no Big Time Program will even hire him as a Defensive Coordinator after being fired by Miami.

That's why I said we need a good OC with him just like GOL needed a good OC to win.
Bruce Feldman, Andy Staples, and many more call Collins a rising star. Why doesn't UCF get someone on the rise for once who the Gators + Mississippi State trusted to coordinate their Defense over Shannon?

My choices in top tier A group

Dino Barbers
Geoff Collins
Matt Campbell
Les Miles (long shot at best)
Gene Chizik
Jim Leavitt

Tier B

Mario Cristobal
Randy Shannon

Tier C

Houston Nutt

Just like we were hearing how quickly the A.D. was going to be named and it came to be; it appears that we could be hearing who the next HC is by next Tuesday now that list is being shared in news :)

I know some have said they want a complete reset on coaching staff but I believe it would be good to keep some UCF legacy players like Smith and Walker-Sims to talk to recruits about UCF players going to NFL.

Collins, Shannon thread on 247

Apparently Collins comes off as genius during interviews. As you can see with the belt after a forced turnover and little swaggy incentives like writing your name on the white board on the side line as it seems Tabor is doing every week, just those little things make him brilliant in a subtle way. Kids love "swag" and flavor and Collins understands that and uses it and the kids LOVE THAT SHIT. This is a flashy era. No one goes for the banal approach that Penn State is built on. Kids don't give a damn about that kinda stuff. There a kids that pick schools because they like the friggin jerseys the most[laughing]. Facts. Wouldn't be shocked to see Collins get it.

We need flash! Big Time...Bring back the names and bring the flash

IMO, it was a knee jerk reaction by a inexperience AD, he did not even had a plan in place when he fired Randy.
He was offered DC positions at other schools such Maryland, UCLA. He took advantage of the new 3 year contract extension he signed with UM, it was later stated that in order for him to receive the full compensation of his contract he could not take a job above a position coach. He took the first year from coaching. He later took the LB coaching job at TCU, the following year he took the LB coach at Arkansas which was the last year of the UM contract extension. Then his second year at Arkansas, he became associate head coach at Arkansas. He is in the same position at UF today.

Since he left UM, he have became a pain in UM's side on the recruiting trail. His downside at UM was the lack of network of assistants outside of UM connections. Working under Gary Patterson, Bret Bielema, and Jim Mcelwain probably improved this network, so he could put a quality staff together.

Just remember TCU, Arkansas, and UF have paid him great sum of money, especially for South Florida recruiting. Just remember when UM fired him, Teddy Bridgewater and other South Florida recruits went to Louisville afterwards, most of them were being recruiting by his staff.

What's the opinion on Beckton and Fisher (is 1 year enough to judge him, and could the screw-up with the recruit at the Furman game be because told by O'leary or whoever to not bother with him?i.e he was never coming here so forget it)

Hard to judge the lower assistants with the way things have gone this season. It just would be nice to keep a few legacy players and promote the NFL pipeline :)

Front page says we have finalists. Here's hoping they don't include Nevada head coaches, or position coaches. Here's hoping they hire someone a head coach trusted with running their offense or defense in addition to being a good recruiter. One article I read expects Sunday to be the big firing day, so many more jobs open soon.

Things that make you go hhhhmmmmmmmmm.

Wonder if Danny White's comments at his initial presser on his preference for one with HC experience was a smoke-screen?

I'm thinking this too. He may have been throwing the Nevada guy out their to throw some onlookers off guard. Misinformation.

I'm getting really excited about this. Other than the Nevada guy there is a lot of credible evidence that some really quality candidates are interested and have or will interview. Expect an announcement very soon. Like anywhere from today until Monday.

yeah it's exciting but it has been weird how the games are sort of background noise at this point. I hope this never happens again, the next time UCF is searching for a coach I hope it's bc the new HC is so successful that Texas offers him 25 mil a year, not the reverse circumstances of 2015

Was down at the Kangaroo and overheard Tim Brewster's name as a dark horse candidate. This is all very hush hush, and privy only to doctoral candidates who wash jock straps after every single summer conditioning session.

Also heard double secret hush hush pillow talk that Christobal would pursue James Coley as OC. Great recruiter, average coach (like Brewster?).

Also heard Taggart in line at Tropical Smoothie say he was going to "pour it on" tonight, so I bought a triple-XL Banana's Froster and slapped it upside his stupid face!

This isn't the NFL draft so there is no real purpose in having smokescreens. Additionally, any logical person would prefer a coach with previous head coaching experience otherwise you are just extrapolating their performance from a positional or coordinator position. That being said, I don't think that eliminates coaches without experience.

Or more likely Polian is a family friend and he was doing him a favor for future jobs by leaking his name for UCF when we were never really hiring him.
I really, really hope so... I'm working on a write up involving most of the future head coaches for UCF and Polian in my opinion would be an awful hire. However, the connections are there which scares the hell out of me.

Polian could cut right thru all the dead wood in our way. I actually have little problems with any of the names on our list. Just hope they can get it done quickly. like 10 to 14 days.

The same Polian that in his first year at Nevada lead the team to their worst record in 12 years? The one that as a HC has never signed a four star recruit and averages less than 4 three star commits per recruiting class as HC? The one who’s sideline antics lead to a $10,000 fine from his own school and a public warning from the Mountain West conference? Yea…. I don’t see him as the right guy for our HC position.
