For the parents, at what age is it acceptable to give kids a smartphone now?

I notice the ages are getting younger and younger for kids using their own phone. My instinct says somewhere around the age of ten if I had a kid.

At what age did you give one to your kids, or plan to?

And at what age do you take off any parental locks for content?

I will likely get my kids a phone to keep on them once they go to school. However, it will be an old flip phone.

6 years old with a full data plan. As I always used to say, "Old enough to be on MySpace, old enough to sit on my face".

Both of ours when they started activities that we were not present for . Also by 3rd and 4 th grade they have opportunities to bring in their own technology ( phone , I pad etc ) to do research , get learning apps to help with homework etc . Just because my generation didn't have them or need them at a young age doesn't mean squat now . The world is technology dependent like it or not . I refuse to put them at a disadvantage because I grew up in a different era

My oldest is 10. He's getting one when he goes off to middle school next year, mostly because he will be taking the bus to and from the school instead of my wife or me dropping off/picking up at extended day at the school, and we will want to make sure he has a way to get a hold of an adult should he need one. He has a few classmates with phones, but they are strictly not allowed to use them during school hours.

14 for my boys. It also works as a great tool to keep them in line. They are not allowed to have it n their room at night though, way too distracting.

That's what happened in SC last week...when the HS girl wouldn't stop using her cell phone in class...so teacher/principal called in the cop (HS resource officer), who was just fired for dragging that same girl out of class...all because she wouldn't stop using her cell phone in class.
