OK Cooligans ... need some help here.

As most of you know, when Im not lawyering or teaching, Im lobbying up here in Tallahassee. And keeping up appearances is important in that business. One of my partners is throwing a party at his home with friends. This isn't a pool party with Budweiser. It's being catered and the event is in Tallahassee's best community. Everyone knows that clients will be there and we are expected to dress smartly. Its just a courtesy you show to your friend hosting.

Here's the deal: The host is a bit abrasive and his wife is unbearable. He recently asked one of our other partners if he would drive another vehicle to the party or catch a ride, rather than the 2001 Ford Mustang that the partner drives to work each day. The vehicle needs paint, has dents, etc. The host said his wife requested it because the Mustang will be parked out front and it sends a poor message to clients attending the party about the finances of the firm. I actually tend to agree with her belief, but not her methods of confronting the guy with the problem.

I've got the reputation as the peacemaker amongst a tight knit group of guys here at the firm. So Im being asked to mediate this situation. The guy that owns the car is going offing crazy angry about it saying she is a bitch and he will drive what he wants. Not going to the party is not an option. He has to be there.

So, here's the question:

When you see a guy in his early 40's, nicely dressed, driving a beat up Mustang, do you think to yourself, current or former white trash? Ladies: He's unmarried and hasn't dated in awhile, so I have considered tell him that the stang is hurting his game with the ladies in his age group. True?

I thought this was going to be a Mustang thread .

I agree about appearance. You can't be pulling up in an old beater with customers around. You also can't have too nice a vehicle or they'll think they're paying you too much. I would assume he understands that, he's just pissed off the way the message was delivered? Get him a rental. Some people don't care about their vehicle and just need something to get them from a to b and thats aok in my book. I'm that way with my house.

Uber it to the party, get drunk, uber home. Problem solved and yes I do charge a minimum one hour for consultations...

Any Mustang short of a 1970ish fast back is a pos. If demote him to associate and make him do research all day until he got wise with his car choices.

A. That is a bitch move.

B. Why didn't someone just make up a task that he could do but would require two people to handle? He could have just arrived with the other person or maybe make up a lie about parking availability and people must arrive in twos like Noahs Ark. Hell, it could be an Ark party.

The way it was handled seemed to lack any tact. I have never claimed that lawyers were particularly intelligent or creative (on average. obviously present company excluded), but someone involved in this decision could have come up with a creative solution. What is it with old lawyers and their abrasiveness?

Go with him to the luxury rental car company. Get him a mazerati or something like that. Go way over the top with the car. Tell him this is a great way to show her that she is being stupid when he pulls up in a $200k car. Then let him expense it as a marketing expense.

He will feel good because he will have "shown her" even though it is passive aggressive. She will be happy because she will have gotten her way. And who knows, he might find some strange at the party because of the car and realize the old one was holding him back.

Fukc that bitch right in the fukcing ass. Mustang guy needs to find another job where he's not surrounded by stupid kunts like that.

You can take the other side of the argument. The beater rustang shows humility, "Down to earth" and "one of the guys", not pompous rich folk nonsense. It shows a different set of values and diversity. Not going to milk the client for all they have to support your fancy car, drugs, and hi priced hoes habit. Additionally, most folk who are rich got there because they (or someone in their family) are/were cheap.

That's kind of the problem tho. The lobbying side of the practice is expected to be somewhat flashy. The clients are generally spending the company's money, not their own, unlike small/mid size firm practice. The clients know you are selling experience and access and that it costs money. Access means that you have friends around you that are part of the "club." To have a dude show up in a beater kinda sends the message that we have made someone part of our organization that doesnt belong, doesnt fit in, and doesnt want to belong or fit it because he makes enough to drive something that doesnt stick out. He's also the type of guy that won't overcome that perception with his personality later. If the guy was the next effing Burt Reynolds and showed up with the trophy girlfriend and was the life of the party, most of the lobbying clients would say to themselves. Great guy. Weird he drives that car. Its exactly the opposite of that situation. He will likely stay inside the house and talk about work most of the time while everyone else is out by the pool having fun.

FWIW, the legal side guys, like myself, drive fairly conservative vehicles for the reasons set forth above. We would be upset if someone bought a car in excess of $100,000.00 like you see at other firms. Most of us are in midsized 4dr autos. Higher end Camrys, Accords, a few 5 series, a Mercedes that is leased because divorce wrecked his credit, etc. Everything is nice, but not too nice. Our houses are in the right places. Our kids go to private schools. Except this guy.

The rental thing doesnt really solve the problem. This is a small town. Our clients see us at church, grocery, etc. Its like practicing in Muskogee or Bartlesville or Lakeland or Melbourne if you live in Florida.

That goofy bitch needs a good frickin so she will calm the fuk down
Funny you mention that. She used to the spokesmodel for a car dealership about ten years ago. The type of car ad that runs every day during the local evening news. She fit the stereotype. Mid thirties, blonde, fake boobs, fading looks, but still tries to act hot. During that period, she was married to another guy that owned the dealership. That guy drunkenly told me once in the deepest of his despair (as she was divorcing him for way more than half for screwing his secretary), that they would host swingers parties. He said she would take two or three at a time in full view of the group, rather than retire to one of the bedrooms where the party was being hosted like everyone else. I've actually considered bringing that up as an example of why she shouldn't be so concerned about appearances of others and let this fly over. What is more likely to happen is that he will go get a somewhat newer, but still used Mustang, and expect the firm to help him with the down payment or financing or something. He was hinting around about it at the courthouse this morning while I was waiting for a judge to finish his paper and get off the pot. I think he has some type of emotional attachment to the car because he bought it in law school and he has mentioned more than once how his girlfriend at the time (who broke his heart) complimented him on the car. At this point, if we all have to work 2 extra hours to get this problem taken care of, I imagine it will blow over.

Ask your partner if he wants the phone number to my good friend who is a divorce attorney. What a dumb whore.

I guess you guys should just fire the guy since you're all full of shit and only care about appearances and impressing other people. Sad life.
