Free College and Student Loan Forgiveness

So where will all the money come from to pay for the extra professors and infrastructure now that tuition is free? Make college free and everyone will enroll and abuse the system. Much like socialized medicine. Dumb idea is dumb.

Everyone who wants to already enrolls they just run up debt of they can't pay for it.

I haven't read Warren's plan, but in no way should everyone have the right to attend college without qualification. I'm not sure if it still exists, but as of a few years ago New Mexico had a program whereby all you needed was a "C" average in high school and 100% of your college tuition would be paid by the state. The funds came from the state lottery. We financed an off-campus student housing project at UNM (in Albuquerque) and I can tell you that there were many, many people enrolled at that school that had no business going to college. The only reason they signed up is because they met the very low criteria for free tuition. I know there was a push by some state legislators to raise the GPA threshold, but I don't know if that ever got done. We got out of that deal (i.e., made whole on our investment) by the skin of our teeth and I'll never do another deal in New Mexico ever again.

I am a huge proponent of higher education but that said...

I am very skeptical about how college and university administrators would manage the "free" tuition dollars they receive given the way they've historically responded to money from the government. Over the past 30 years, college tuition has skyrocketed in relationship to any other major consumer purchase.

Do the "free tuition" people really believe the infusion of new tax dollars into the system would do anything but increase this trajectory?

Interesting. This chart states that it's "tuition & fees". I assume that includes athletic fees or other subsidies for sports programs. If so, how will that be impacted by 100% free college?

Here we go. We're entering the "promise them free shit" phase where these braindead socialists will start trying to one-up eachother on promises of free stuff.

And they'll pay for all 100 proposals by stoking contempt for those goddamn rich people! They should pay for all of this!

Why forgive student loan debt? What is so divine and righteous about student loans that younger people have? Why not forgiving mortgage debt? Car debt? What about credit card debt for young people who didn't attend college? Why do entitled millennials who wasted 4 years in college and went into debt for an art degree get that debt forgiven, but not a millennial who had a family and has house, credit card, and other debt?

i paid off my student loans years ago like a responsible person. will i be able to apply for that money to be repayed to me?

If you have a college degree, make less than 100 grand, and have over 50 grand in debt for your education you shouldn't have gone to college.

And shuckster is 100% spot on. This is just going to make things worse. At least people have to think about their future when they get loans. If they can go to college for free then the fleecing will just get worse.

It's not over 50k it's under 50k in debt.

So 75k families being taxed 2% and you don't have to pay for college for your kids and you're all like, **** that lets the $50million in asset families keep their money I'll just saddle my children with debt or pay it myself out of my lower middle class invome out of principle! Y'all are some groveling cucks. Jesus.

Its very important for the ultra wealthy to keep dumb shits like y'all fighting for their interests. It's the biggest scam in history. Democracy is based on people fighting for their own best interests and today in America we have a group of people actively fighting against their own class because they are dumb enough to get tricked into thinking the wealthy deserve to stay wealthy.

Does Bright Futures still exist? I had it when I was in college - but it started to dwindle down and not pay the full amount that it used to. It was still very helpful.

I'm not *against* most of Warren's proposals - I just don't think many of them are realistic. She's promising an awful lot that sure - plenty of Dems can rally behind - but I think they'll be sorely disappointed when she can't get them passed.

Look at how Shook you are. It's unreal. You've been duped into believing that your own shortcomings in life are the fault of rich people and now you're shook.

You ignored my earlier questions so I'll ask again- what is so divine about college debt that we must forgive everyone who knowingly took on that debt? Stop telling me about rich people and start telling me why college loan debt is so massively different from any other form of debt?

Why not credit card debt? Mortgage debt? Car loans? Small business loans? Private equity loans? How about any debt currently issued? Tell me why people with student loan debt deserve to be let off the hook any more than people with these forms of debt who didn't go to college?

This is nothing more than a pathetic Free Shit bone to throw to dumbshit millennials who think that their liberal arts degrees should take priority over everyone else in the country.

As much as it pains me to say it, I agree with 85 on this one. IMHO, the issue isn’t student loans, it’s the obscene levels those loans have skyrocketed to in order for students to pay for college. THAT is the real issue behind the staggering amount of student loan debt we have in this country.

The “free tuition for all” promise has nothing to do with helping students and everything to do with the higher education lobby. As it is getting more and more difficult for average Americans to afford college, this initiative is all about the fat cat colleges and universities continuing to get fatter.

FWIW, shuckster really does know what he's talking about on this topic. It would pain me to say that but he agrees with me.

Let's steal from the rich because we are lazy leeches! That will teach the rich from making money!

when the gov got involved and made it so the loans had to be paid off, the colleges were paying attention. the colleges realized they had a captive audience that couldnt go anywhere else for their service. they raised their prices slowly but surely every year because they knew the loans would be there.

if you want to see the prices go back down, you need to make the loans more risky again. then fewer would be handed out and the prices would drop like a rock.
