Too bad it has to be like that. We used to just show licenses and tell purpose of visit, and off you go.
I haven't tried, but several friends have said getting into Canada is kinda easy. It's getting back that is difficult.

Have a family member that made a trip to Europe recently and forgot her cash and credit cards to pay for hotel check in.
Funny story. The hotel comped our first meal. The French waiter said to our table that "you are downgraded". Upon hearing his comments, all the Americans nearby burst out laughing (including us).

They're only so polite because they have so few people and SO much land. They are essentially Montana, the Dakotas, and Idaho with a few large cities sprinkled in. The people in the big cities are just as dickish as in America.
Any American that says they're going to leave the U.S. if Trump wins should head south, not north. Would love to see what happens when they cross the border, are forced to pay off drug smugglers, then pay off the crooked cops, watch as their wives and daughters are raped by criminal elements, try and enroll their children into "free" public schools, apply for food stamps and government housing, and seek medical attention at Mexican hospitals that are reserved for 'citizens only.'
yeah I hate cold weather too much to ever live in Canada. There are safe resort towns like Cabo & others on the Pacific Coast south of San Diego that have a good number of ex pats. Costa Rica and Panama down in Central America are other good options
